Should Game of Thrones Fans Wait to Read the Books?

Nov 20, 2014

If you haven’t read A Song of Ice and Fire (of which I am guilty), I am certain you are tired of seeing “SPOILER” in an article/video and immediately having to stop viewing. It takes...

Movie Review: That Awkward Moment

Nov 21, 2014

What I most came away from this movie with was that this film was a guy’s film trying to pass itself off as a girl’s film. Not saying movies are necessarily gender oriented, but you...

THE LEFTOVERS Season 1: Final Episodes Trailer

THE LEFTOVERS Season 1: Final Episodes Trailer

HBOWatch is fully aware that fans will be focusing on the series finale of TRUE BLOOD tonight. So are we, in fact we will review it and reflect back on the series in the days to come. However, THE LEFTOVERS is also winding down, but just for the season, not for good, as it has already been renewed for its sophomore run coming in the summer of ’15. As of this writing it has two episodes to go in its premiere season. They are # 9: The Garvey’s At Their Best (this episode begins 10 minutes late due to an extended final episode for our friends from Bon Temps) and the season ender # 10: The Prodigal Son Returns airing on 09.07.14. In...

The Knick Season 1: “Mr Paris Shoes”

The Knick Season 1: “Mr Paris Shoes”

In the second episode of The Knick, we are led through the morally corrupt and racially charged goings on in the hospital. Three things stood out in my mind: cadavers, cocaine and kickbacks. Modern medicine was trial and error back in the early 1900s, as was the idea of electricity and racial equality. I must add that Kudos is in order for Clive Owen’s riveting performance. He tends to dominate almost every scene he’s in. His character is cool under fire, yet the things he says can set your teeth on edge. Although you admire the man of medicine, you wonder what’s to admire about the man underneath it all. I also really enjoy the witty...

The Wall Welcomes Bowen Marsh to Game of Thrones Season 5

The Wall Welcomes Bowen Marsh to Game of Thrones Season 5

The amazing casting news continues to roll in as we learn that Michael Condron, known mainly for his role in The Tudors, will be joining the Game of Thrones season 5 cast that lives at Castle Black as Bowen Marsh.  Bowen plays s pivotal role in the books and is part of the leadership core of The Wall after Lord Commander Mormont’s death. He’s probably not the most memorable character for you book readers but there are some moments we can’t wait to see involving his character. We’ll see if his in-book role matches what we see on screen in the Spring of 2015! His agency announced the development today, which paired...

First Girls Season 4 Trailer

First Girls Season 4 Trailer

Girls is coming back and this time Hannah isn’t in the hustle and bustle of New York City. She’s at school! HBO released this little teaser to, well tease us with a bit of Hannah’s new world. It looks like she’s as clumsy and fumbl..y as ever. Take a look: Girls Season 4 will premiere (most likely) early 2015. We won’t have an exact air date until HBO announces it but if patterns hold true (and they usually do on HBO with the schedule, at least!) you should expect to see the Girls again early next year. Until then… keep on, ridin’...

HBO Documentary Films: CAPTIVATED: THE TRIALS OF PAMELA SMART

HBO Documentary Films: CAPTIVATED: THE TRIALS OF PAMELA SMART

Overview:  The HBO press release states – When the curtain rose on the murder trial of Pamela Smart murder case 23 years ago, the stage was set for the birth of reality TV. Accused of plotting the 1990 murder of her husband Gregory, the 22-year-old Smart was subsequently convicted in the first fully televised, gavel-to-gavel court case, which has inspired TV shows, books, plays and feature films. An official selection of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, this documentary explores how the media coverage of the case may have influenced the trial and sentencing. It features an exclusive new interview with Smart herself, as well as...

True Blood Season 7: Love Is To Die

True Blood Season 7: Love Is To Die

Well Truebies, we’ve made it through 79 episodes of our vampire/fairy/werewolf/shifter/Maenad/insert supernatural creature here show. That’s 79 episodes of Sookie, Bill, Lafayette, Arlene, and Jason. I’m sure there are a few others who have been around but I don’t remember them appearing in every episode (sorry Eric and Pam!). The beginning of this season had hope and a bit of redemption; by now, it’s so muddled that apparently people only breathe long enough to curse and then talk in fake southern accents (us real Southerners know). So last week, we said goodbye to Tara and went on an insane head trip that,...

Movie Review: Veronica Mars

Movie Review: Veronica Mars

Full Disclosure: I have been a Veronica Mars fan for years, and I participated in the Kickstarter campaign to bring one of my all-time favorite detectives to the big screen. During three seasons in 2004-2007, Veronica Mars earned a small but loyal fanbase. During its final year, changes were made to the structure of the show, and finally, it was canceled. Many, including creator Rob Thomas, felt the final episode did not provide closure, particularly for the character arcs, and attempts have been made over the years to fund a Veronica Mars movie. Finally, through Kickstarter, the project came to fruition. Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) came...

The Leftovers Season 1: “Cairo”

The Leftovers Season 1: “Cairo”

Watching this particular episode was like having a very bizarre dream. You feel surrounded by fog and can’t quite put the pieces together. You stumble around blindly, not knowing where to go or what will happen next. When you have a disturbing dream, you feel anxious; numb or completely bewildered. Everyone is lost in this episode. Some, more than others. The plot line of this episode varies from Kevin and Nora, to Patty and the GR crew, to apathetic Jill and company, and then back to Patty, Dean and Kevin. Personally, I enjoyed the two episodes that focused exclusively on one character’s perspective. I know I enjoyed learning a lot...

HBO Comedy Special: KATT WILLIAMS: PRICELESS

HBO Comedy Special: KATT WILLIAMS: PRICELESS

Right off the bat let me affirm that yes, as a comedic talent Katt Williams is pretty priceless. We gave you the heads up that his comedy special was going to premiere and it did do that with a title change. All of a sudden it became KATT WILLIAMS: PRICELESS: AFTERLIFE. Whatever, I think maybe at some point he had the epiphany that all was going well enough post incarceration that he is a new man reborn. Bottom line is it makes good comedy. The 59-minute routine was a fast paced riff on how we need to just laugh it off. Williams himself, even after being arrested “5 times in 5 cities in 5 days” laughs it off as he mentions his criminal...

Bringing Home the Trophies: HBO at the 2014 Creative Emmy Awards

HBO has always been one of the best, something that’s shown constantly with the way fans and critics adore the shows that have been produced by the infamous network. Such recognition was shown yet again during this years Creative Arts Emmy‘s where HBO took home more trophies to add to their every growing collection!                                                             True Detective: 4 Wins! This freshman thriller-drama was an immediate fan favorite, staring one of the best ensembles we’ve seen in a long time and providing a fresh perspective on the genre. We all love it already and...

SILICON VALLEY’s Promotional Campaign for Season Two

SILICON VALLEY’s Promotional Campaign for Season Two

SILICON VALLEY is one of those kind of shows that has a built in fan base that helps make it a popular hit. Think of it as sort of like Big Bang Theory; yes, the mainstream like it but the niche audience really embraces it.  I don’t know the PC way to say it (and don’t much care for being politically correct anyway) but the techno geeks, have another show in the Mike Judge company. And since SILICON VALLEY is all about the tech world then it seems logical that it utilizes the tech world constructs out there to promote the show, right? According to readwite.com, which I gather is a tech world news site, the HBO comedy has set up a...

TRUE DETECTIVE’s Pizzolatto Accused of Plagiarism

TRUE DETECTIVE’s Pizzolatto Accused of Plagiarism

TRUE DETECTIVE has had a lot of positive news all about casting rumors and Emmy nominations, but lately some negative news surfaced when series creator Nic Pizzolatto was called out for plagiarism. You’ve got to go back to the scenes of Rust Cohle’s “interrogation” where his dark, nihilistic philosophy comes to the surface. The accusations state that a number of lines in those speeches were lifted from a writer of by the name of Thomas Ligotti. Mr. L is a prolific horror writer that seems to know his way around dark themes. If you want to check specific line for line comparisons between the two writers and formulate an opinion...

HBO’s John Oliver Announces Tour

HBO’s John Oliver Announces Tour

Straight from John Oliver’s website we learn that on his hiatus from LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER we will be going on a 15-stop stand-up tour. As of this posting LAST WEEK TONIGHT has aired fifteen of its twenty-four episode run. That means the show’s Season One will end in mid-October and that gives him enough time to squeeze in a few dates around the country before the end of the year. John Oliver is no stranger to the stand-up gig as that was what he was doing in the UK before moving to the States in 2006. Of course, we know that he had a healthy stint on The Daily Show and a few Comedy Central specials under his belt before...

Curb your Enthusiasm Because Larry David Is Busy

Curb your Enthusiasm Because Larry David Is Busy

For a while now HBOWatch has been hankering for a Season Nine of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM with Larry David. The last time we saw him in a weekly stint was back in Season Eight: post-divorce in Paris, France. Ever since then we have been wondering whether or not he would return to the series; even HBO programming chief Michael Lombardo and cast member Jeff Garlin keep their hopes up. Well as it turns out– we shouldn’t hold our breath because Larry David has been very busy. He is even quoted as saying  – “Ask me in six months” – and that was this time last year. I suppose we could understand that he couldn’t do it then...
