Sep 19, 2014

Tywin Lannister: A great villain of Westeros?  Or Westeros’ greatest villain? Either way many fans were (spoiler alert) sad to lose the Lannister Patriarch last season even though most...

Imagination is the driving force behind all art, and yet it is a very difficult process to capture. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is one of the few films that has managed to tap into the...

The Next Round of TRUE DETECTIVE Rumors

The Next Round of TRUE DETECTIVE Rumors

Now we know that supposedly any day now HBO will announce something official regarding the second season of the detective anthology series by Nic Pizzolatto. This writer thought it would be fun to let the rumors fly one more time before then. We have not been poking around the rumor mill and listing every little item that has been speculated, but since Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain’s name have been dropped other noted names have been bandied about as well. How about Joaquin Phoenix, Christian Bale, Michael Fassbender and/or Josh Brolin? Cate Blanchett also surfaced as a good possibility. The latest buzz has touched many sites including...

True Detective Season 2 cast to be announced next week?

True Detective Season 2 cast to be announced next week?

As if the amazing plethora of 20 HBO Emmy nominations (including True Detective‘s own McConaughey and Harrelson) wasn’t enough good news, we have more. Earlier today at the Television Critics Association press tour, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said of True Detective Season 2; “The two scripts we have… I hate to jinx it… they are more exciting than the first season. [Creator Nic Pizzolatto] is an incredibly talented writer. And he’s blown us away with the first two episodes.” On top of that, he confirmed that casting announcements could come as soon as next week. Teasing that we...

Luke Grimes Refuses to Come Out of the Closet on True Blood

Luke Grimes Refuses to Come Out of the Closet on True Blood

True Blood is a show known for its controversial scenes, particularly in regards to sex. Being on a platform like HBO, this show is able to take risks in regards to sex and violence, as well as more progressive issues such as gay rights. Open sexuality has been apparent in the show from the beginning by featuring an openly gay character, Lafayette, and the sexual choices of vampires in bedding who they so desire, regardless of gender. One cast member allegedly couldn’t handle the sexual turn his character took, and chose to leave the show. I’m referring to Luke Grimes, who departed fairly quickly after only seven episodes on the...

HBO’s Series, Talent Nominated for 2014 Emmys

HBO’s Series, Talent Nominated for 2014 Emmys

It happens ever year: HBO’s series, actors, actresses, writers, directors, movies and more are given nods at the Emmys. Often HBO pulls in more wins than any other network. That’s quite the feat considering it’s a network with only a handful of original series and a smaller, premium audience (that’s you!). Today the Television Academy announced the nominations for 2014 Emmy Awards and, yes, familiar HBO names littered the list yet again. Here are some of the highlights: Drama Series “Breaking Bad” (AMC) “Downton Abbey” (PBS) “Game of Thrones” (HBO) “Mad Men” (AMC) “True Detective” (HBO) Last...

Orange Is the New Oz?

Orange Is the New Oz?

A new prison drama worth mentioning comes every few years. In 1997, it was Oz, a show about a prison with a cell block built under idealistic views of rehabilitation. They called it Emerald City. Oz ended with six seasons after wrapping up most of story lines that kept their viewers tuning in. Since then, there wasn’t a show that brought its audience into the world of prison life quite the way that HBO did. Netflix has quickly gone from being a subscription-based streaming service to producing an arsenal of original content. Among its shows, Orange Is the New Black is getting a lot of attention. You may have even seen a commercial for...

HBO Documentary Films: DANGEROUS ACTS STARRING THE UNSTABLE ELEMENTS OF BELARUS

Overview: In Belarus, a country bordering Ukraine and Russia, uncensored art is regarded by the government as a criminal activity and can have dire consequences, including imprisonment, life in exile, or worse. But one group of actors refuses to remain silent. In this film, director Madeleine Sackler goes behind the scenes with the Belarus Free Theatre (BFT), an internationally acclaimed underground troupe of courageous performers who, in a country choked by censorship and repression, defy Europe’s last remaining dictator, Alexander Lukashenko. This HBO Documentary Films presentation debuted MONDAY, JULY 7 (9:00-10:15 p.m. ET/PT),...

True Blood Season 7: “Fire in the Hole”

True Blood Season 7: “Fire in the Hole”

Is it just me, or is Season 7 of True Blood just really bad? I know that I probably said the same about Season 6 and several other Seasons as well, but the show that has been silly for years, just feels pointless in its final season. Call me an eternal optimist, but I had been holding onto really high hopes that somehow, they would pull it out for the fans in Season 7. That’s not to say there haven’t been some good moments, but they seem so few and far between. For a look at both the good and the bad things, read on. There will be spoilers, obviously, so if you haven’t watched “Fire in the Hole” yet,...

In Production: THE CASUAL VACANCY

In Production: THE CASUAL VACANCY

For months we had not heard a hint about the joint BBC/HBO miniseries THE CASUAL VACANCY project and then a fan of the JK Rowling novel writes a post about it and – boom – a bit of news surfaces. It seems that the film adaptation is now in production in a few locales about England. The story of how a local council seat is filled takes place in the fictitious town of Pagford. The location for the shoot is Stroud in Gloucestershire and the specific center of attention is the Archway School (pictured). According to a few sites local children and faculty of the school, about 200, were used as extras on the film’s first days of shooting....

The Leftovers Season 1: “Penguin One, Us Zero”

The Leftovers Season 1: “Penguin One, Us Zero”

I am unsure of how to review The Leftovers. This hesitation comes as a result of not really being sure what The Leftovers actually is. Does it have a plot? Is the mystery of central importance? Is it about the characters, as writer and producer Damon Lindelof has stressed? Or is it more of a Treme day-in-the-life style show about how a community reacts to a life-changing event? At this point, it is still unclear. What is clear, however, is that Lindelof is still fond of his flashback and symbolism format from the Lost era. It is with these obscure and initially promising, but eventually on-the-nose symbols that I will make an attempt to...

The Leftovers Season 1: “Pilot”

The Leftovers Season 1: “Pilot”

After several months of anticipating the arrival of HBO’s new series “The Leftovers,” the waiting is over. The show debuted on 06.29 to an audience of 1.8 million viewers. With “True Blood” as a solid lead in, “The Leftovers” had a great start. If they can hold off on more animal violence, in my opinion, then I can see this show flourishing and becoming a solid staple among HBO’s Sunday night programming. As with any new series, it’s important to establish who the characters are, where they live, and what’s going on. We begin the show on October 14th, the infamous day when the...

Movies on HBO: BEST MAN HOLIDAY

HBOWatch Editors were not able to line-up a writer to review BEST MAN HOLIDAY, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to draw your attention to the comedy playing on HBO. The movie is a sequel to The Best Man from 1999 in which a friend’s Best Man deals with the dysfunctional wedding party. In this sequel IMDB simply states –      When college friends reunite after 15 years over the Christmas holidays, they discover just how easy it is for long-forgotten rivalries and...

“The Casual Vacancy” Dream Cast

“The Casual Vacancy” Dream Cast

The Casual Vacancy was J.K. Rowling’s first publication post-Potter, and it received mixed reviews. The story is set in an idyllic, English town that becomes entrenched in a squabble when a local councilman dies unexpectedly.  With his seat open, the town splits on one issue, and friends and neighbors turn against each other in an effort to find the seat filled by the “right” person.  Though slow-paced to me, I thought the book was an interesting dissection into the idea of inter-connectivity of people in a small town, and it features a wealth of fascinating characters. Rather like a recipe: take a small town and mix in a...
