THE NIGHT OF: “Part VII: Ordinary Death” Review

Aug 25, 2016

Almost every moment is more intense as we build up to the end and all sides are digging in to survive. At the trial the prosecution builds its case and the defense deflects what it can and...

Girls: “Panic in Central Park”

Girls: “Panic in Central Park”

Lena Dunham tweeted earlier this week that this episode of Girls is “one of the most personal things I’ve written” because through Marnie we are taken on a journey that is so painfully recognisable to so many people by representing a generation’s existential crisis with who they are, what they are doing here and facing the bad decisions that have made up to making his realisation. Marnie’s life is put under the spotlight and given centre stage as it is dissected for all the world to see. This week’s Girls was a welcome change of pace as we had an entire episode devoted solely to Marnie, who didn’t...

VINYL: “The King and I”

VINYL: “The King and I”

As last weeks aptly named episode “Cyclone” closed I thought Richie’s world start to dramatically crumble into nothing, a feeling that has been murmuring through each episode since the incident at The Mercer in Episode One. Yet again, however, we are taken on a whirlwind journey to Las Vegas where Richie and Zak have their sights set on signing The King himself. But we’ll get to that. My problem with Vinyl so far is that I just don’t know where its going or what its trying to say. It has painted a fantastically realistic and enticing picture of the music scene in New York in the mid 1970’s. Richie’s...

Gary Shandling, Who Was HBO’s LARRY SANDERS, Has Died

Gary Shandling, Who Was HBO’s LARRY SANDERS, Has Died

Surely you know by now that American comedian, actor, writer, producer and director Garry Shandling died on 03.24.16 at the age of 66.  HBO stated, “Garry ushered in the modern period of original programming at HBO with his brilliant masterpiece, The Larry Sanders Show. All of us at HBO have a special place in our hearts for him, not only for his enormous talent but for his kindness and decency. We will miss him terribly.” He was a comedic master of observational comedy and satire and played it up well. Before that though his start in the industry was writing for the sitcoms Sanford and Son and Welcome Back, Kotter if you...

HBO’s TOGETHERNESS Cancelled After Two Seasons!

HBO’s TOGETHERNESS Cancelled After Two Seasons!

Our mouths just dropped open in surprise. HBO’s TOGETHERNESS will end its run with the eighth episode of the current season which debuts Sunday, April 10. And HBO, who doesn’t seem to care much about ratings apparently is citing numbers as the reason for the cancellation. The series premiere, on 01.11.15 started off at 427,000 viewers that ballooned up to 2.6 million across the platforms but Season Two, which debuted on 02.21.16, has only seen 330,000 viewers. However, the critics loved it; Rotten Tomatoes for one. Of course, the numbers don’t lie – if not enough people were not watching it then it has to...

Movie Review: Vacation

Movie Review: Vacation

Since this is yet another new movie made to be a callback to an earlier film widely regarded as a classic, I have an idea. Let’s go into a movie like Vacation as if it were a standalone feature. Let’s take all the imagery, references, and callbacks that it makes to its predecessor, National Lampoon’s Vacation, and put all of them on a shelf. How would this movie fare if it were being sold with the Griswold name attached to it? Can we survive this Vacation? Rusty Griswold is all grown up, working as a pilot for a small airline company, and finally has a family of his own. But he’s stuck in a rut. His younger...

New Game of Thrones Commercial Spotted!

New Game of Thrones Commercial Spotted!

Blink and you’ll miss it! HBO apparently released a television commercial today, which a well-prepared fan, managed to snap pictures of and posted to Twitter. From what we can see, there’s a lot of new exciting footage in the commercial, ranging from White Walkers to what looks to be a Tower of Joy flashback. With thirty days to go until the premier of the much anticipated sixth season of Game of Thrones, it would be great if HBO would share the love, and release this newest commercial to the Internet so we can all ogle at it to our heart’s content, and sate a tiny bit of our hunger for a glimpse of Game of Thrones. In...

Togetherness: “Just the Range”

Togetherness: “Just the Range”

With half the season over, (find Episode 4 here) this episode proved to be a turning point for the season and for the characters. It’s a matter of self discovery for all. Alex discovers a kindred spirit. Tina discovers what she really wants in life. Michelle discovers how to be courageous. And Brett…well, he discovers what it is like to have a catfight in the backseat while you’re driving. Alex is working on the movie set in which the original image provided to him is being constantly changed.  From typical Dracula style vampire, he then becomes a vampire who is also a pimp.  Which, never really got explained, but we did...

Girls: “Queen for Two Days”

Girls: “Queen for Two Days”

“I’m about to make some big choices” Hannah’s mother said. It sets the tone for this episode because not only is she trying to figure out how her life will look like now that she knows her husband is gay, but Shoshanna, Jessa and Hannah face some big choices. Hannah and her mother Hannah, from the moment the episode starts, is cynical about her mother’s idea to go to a woman’s retreat called “Spring Queening”. I’m not sure why she so easily rejects the place and the people in it. Maybe it’s her way of rejecting the idea that her parents aren’t people that she thought they were as she grew up. Perhaps...

VINYL: “Cyclone”

VINYL: “Cyclone”

Going into Episode 6 of Vinyl, I had already decided that I liked the series (If you need to catch up, here is the previous episode). In fact, I had decided that I liked it a lot. After Episode 6, I’m wondering if I had been underestimating its intelligence all along. As a die-hard David Bowie fan, I had been looking forward to his appearance on Vinyl. I do not know why Scorsese and company chose to set the series in 1973. I suspect it had more to do with the New York Dolls than anything else. Nevertheless, the setting immediately brought to my mind to the fact that the show would be set during the very brief existence of Ziggy...

The spring shows are ramping up their promotional material for their big debut on 04.24. Well, the comedies at least; GAME OF THRONES has sworn to play it pretty close to the vest, as it were. So just what is in store for VEEP Selina Meyers and her staff and for the crew over in SILICON VALLEY? The following trailers should offer a little insight. We start off with the tech boys. You know them as Richard (Thomas Middleditch), Erlich, (T. J. Miller), Jared (Zach Woods, Bertram (Martin Starr), Big Head (Josh Brener), Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani) and all the others toiling at their jobs in SILICON VALLEY. Here is what a few of them had to say about...

Cinemax’s BANSHEE and OUTCAST Get Premiere Dates

Fans of Cinemax’s BANSHEE have been waiting a while for the concluding season of that series and it is just around the corner as well as the new series OUTCAST which was featured at SXSW this year. Here is a look at both. BANSHEE’s fourth and final season will debut on April 01, 2016 at 10:00pm. It was originally slated for a January debut but was held off a couple of months to firm up finale season. BANSHEE will return for its eight-episode fourth...

Movie Review: Pitch Perfect 2

Movie Review: Pitch Perfect 2

I was a bit concerned when I went to see Pitch Perfect 2 as I didn’t believe it would be able to top the first one and I was right, it couldn’t, but it was still thoroughly entertaining, funny and full to the brim with epic acapella arrangements (that means singing without the aid of a musical instrument).  Pitch Perfect 2 errs more towards the side of silly, slapstick comedy usually at the expense of Fat Amy, which feels like a stuck record at times and rather than making you laugh out loud, it makes you recoil with embarrassment. For a film that is dominated by a female cast, there is little about the characters that do women...
