HBO Documentary Films: THE LAST TRUCK: CLOSING OF A GM PLANT

Overview: On Dec. 23, 2008, two days before Christmas, the General Motors assembly plant in Moraine, Ohio shut its doors. As a result, 2,500 workers and 200 management staff were left without jobs, while the closing is also sure to trigger the loss of thousands of related jobs and businesses. The film views the final months of the plant through the workers’ eyes as they reflect on their work and consider their next steps. In revealing interviews with people who considered themselves more family than co-workers, the film reveals the emotional toll of losing not just a job, but a sense of self. It closes with footage of the actual...

Seth Meyers Ribs HBO at the Emmys

Seth Meyers Ribs HBO at the Emmys

This little joke caught our attention as it was quite clever. HBO is often lauded at the Emmys by the actors, writers and directors who work for the network. Julia Louis-Dreyfus started her acceptance speech with a Thank You to HBO. But even the host got into it last night with this little joke about the Home Box Office: “Congratulations to HBO. They have 99 nominations tonight, the most of any network. Not to be outdone, NBC is also a network.” and then… “I gotta say: HBO is like the kid you grew up with who ended up doing way better than you expected. 99 nominations. When I first met HBO, all he had was Grease...

Development Slate: An NFL Great, STILLWATER & More

Development Slate: An NFL Great, STILLWATER & More

It has actually been a bit quiet on the development front. Even some shows that we know are in the works like BALLERS, THE SPARK, TOGETHERNESS and others are not getting much news. Most news has been focusing instead on the conclusion of a number of HBO series this year. They have to be replaced with some content  besides WESTWORLD in VICE PRINCIPALS so, below, are some deals and concepts that haven’t generated a lot of buzz that we will now give due attention.   Frank Gifford’s Big Game – THE GLORY GAME NFL Hall of Famer Frank Gifford penned a book entitled “The Glory Game” back in 2009 that chronicles an epic NFL matchup...

The Knick Season 1: “The Busy Flea”

The Knick Season 1: “The Busy Flea”

In the third episode of The Knick, the choices made by characters in the past continue to cause unforeseen repercussions. This idea is presented in the opening, when a woman from Dr. Thackery’s past comes to The Knick seeking his aid. Abby was Thackery’s lover, and their affair was a passionate one. His manner with her is gentler than his manner with most people. In the end, Abby left him for another man, one she loved less, in favor of serenity. Ultimately, that other man was unfaithful to her, and he infected her with syphilis. The disease ravaged her face, leaving her without a nose and eyesight that can’t stand even...

The Leftovers: The Garveys at Their Best

The Leftovers: The Garveys at Their Best

This episode may have been a flashback, but its message is arguably more important to the show’s present than it’s past. In last week’s episode we saw a troubled Jill Garvey ponder as to whether anything will ever be okay again. Unbeknownst to her, nothing with the Garvey’s has ever been okay. Their family was dysfunctional down to its very core. The departure didn’t make things worse; it only made the grief that everyone was hiding okay to flaunt in public. “Something’s wrong inside you” We learn who the majority of the Guilty Revenant were before the departure. Patty was an isolated housewife in therapy, and Laurie was the...

The Normal Heart on DVD & Blu-Ray August 26th

The Normal Heart comes out on DVD tomorrow. Based on the stageplay by Larry Kramer, it tells the story about the emergence of HIV and AIDs in the gay community of the early 80’s, as told through fictional writer Ned Weeks. Without knowledge or proper awareness of the disease, it spread as easily and effectively as it tore apart the lives of those it infected. Today, medical advancements allow people who have contracted the illness to lead lives as close to what one considers normal as possible. But even ten years ago, those prospects weren’t nearly as hopeful. Aside from the film itself, on the DVD there’s a short...
