Movie Review: “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates”

Feb 24, 2017

With what I thought was a weak premise to start, I wasn’t sure how I would like this film. But much like a watered down drink, you add more alcohol (in this case four outstanding comedic...

Movie Review: Deadpool

Movie Review: Deadpool

Before going into my deep, longing love letter to Deadpool, let’s address the elephant in the room. The truth is, comic book movies aren’t memorable anymore. This year alone, we had four additional comic book films (Batman vs. Superman, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse, & Suicide Squad) and the upcoming Dr. Strange in November. As usual with big comic book years, it’s easy to get jaded expecting a string of superheroes that will probably take themselves too seriously. This is precisely why Deadpool is such an essential part of both comic book films and modern cinema—it turns the superhero genre on its head...

Who is Issa Rae?

Who is Issa Rae?

Premiering on HBO next week (the 9th) is Issa Rae’s new comedy Insecure, which focuses on the experiences of a young, black woman in an authentic and uncliched way. The basis for her show is familiar to the generation in which it is targeting and follows Issa as she tries to figure out her purpose in life. The show also deals with cultural and racial issues that are prevalent in contemporary black culture. While comparisons will be drawn between Lean Dunham’s hit HBO show Girls, which also follows disillusioned and confused young women trying to find their fit in life, it has become known that Insecure will address the issues in a...

The stunning show featuring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Rob Corddry, and many other outstanding actors has finished a fantastic season. So fantastic they have already been secured for a third. “Westworld” Previews Garner Great Reviews

“Westworld” Previews Garner Great Reviews

Toted as the new Game of Thrones, the sci-fi thriller has yet to make its television debut but is quickly gathering positive reviews. Based on the novel by Michael Crichton, Westworld takes place in a futuristic theme park centered around the old west.  Allowing visitors to submerse themselves in a world of sin, violence, and gratification, Westworld is all about fulfilling desires.  But soon things begin going awry, and the story preys on a common human worry: what happens when artificial intelligence becomes sentient?  Take a peek! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuS5huqOND4 As with Game of Thrones, HBO has proven that large scale...

Vice Principals Season Finale: “End of the Line”

Vice Principals Season Finale: “End of the Line”

Vice Principals has come to an end with a glorious, good old fashioned ‘whodunnit’ mystery cliff hanger. Forget JR, the question on everyone’s lips is now going to be ‘Who Shot NG?’. The season got progressively better for me, it started out a little unpolished, a little heavy handed and attempts at humor felt lazy. However, the characters have progressed and developed and the story broadened making it a really excellent, well rounded series which gives you just enough that you want more and more. True to form, the season finale was dark as we saw Gamby and Russell lure Principal Brown out on to the train tracks (I’m not entirely...

Still Waiting to Hear of THE NIGHT OF Season Two

Still Waiting to Hear of THE NIGHT OF Season Two

With the way THE NIGHT OF ended its run back on 08.28 it appeared as there could be more story to tell. As of this posting it has almost been a month and there has been no official word on whether there is a Season Two. Think of the possibilities. At the very least, perhaps Nasir Khan (Riz Ahmed) would always be haunted by the ordeal that one night in October and the aftermath of it all. The Khan family could also see lasting effects and you could wonder what was ahead for John Stone (John Tuturro). There is also the possibility of Helen Weiss (Jeannie Berlin) and Dennis Box going after who they believe is the real killer (Ray Halle played...

If You Skipped the HIGH MAINTENANCE Webisodes You Missed…

You all know about HIGH MAINTENANCE appearing on HBO Friday nights at 11:00pm, right? It is all about the customers weed delivery man “The Guy” meets around NYC as he delivers their purchases. You also know that it started out as a web series, right? They were featured on Vimeo, but now HBONow/Go has them. There are 19 webisodes total and most of them are titled after the customer seen in the clip.  Each edition only runs about ten minutes long and a minute or so of that time is opening comments from creators Ben Sinclair, who also plays The Guy and Katja Blichfeld.   Here is a crash course (oops, we hope you don’t crash too hard, if...

Movie Review: Steve Jobs

Movie Review: Steve Jobs

Danny Boyle has had an interesting career as a director with the ability to make large sweeping films that take you on a physical journey, to smaller low key films that take you on emotional journeys. Steve Jobs, the director’s latest film, tackles the legacy of the famous Apple CEO, spanning through three separate key notes pivotal to his career. When tackling a biopic you can choose one of two ways to approach it. You can either attempt to capture the person’s entire life or you can focus on a few key moments of his life. The specific focus utilized in this movie, you will find, is both its strength and its weakness. Firstly...

HBO Documentary Films: 3 DAYS OF TERROR: THE CHARLIE HEBDO ATTACKS

HBO Documentary Films: 3 DAYS OF TERROR: THE CHARLIE HEBDO ATTACKS

Overview: On Jan. 7, 2015, two brothers belonging to Al-Qaeda in Yemen stormed the Paris offices of the satiric weekly Charlie Hebdo, killing 11 people and injuring 11 others before killing a French police officer. Amidst a massive manhunt for the killers, an additional five people were murdered and 11 wounded in related attacks over the next two days, including a harrowing standoff between police and a third gunman, claiming allegiance to ISIS, at a kosher supermarket near the Porte de Vincennes in Paris. Drawing on exclusive access to hostages, survivors, police, paramilitary forces and intelligence findings and evidence, as well as...

Lena Dunham’s Goodbye to “Girls”

Lena Dunham’s Goodbye to “Girls”

We’ve known this day was coming for a while now but that doesn’t make it any less emotional! Dunham announced at the beginning of the year that the sixth season of the hit show would be it’s last. She said that Hannah belongs in her twenties and as she approaches and enters her thirties she felt that the chapter had closed and said in an interview that she “feel(s) ready to turn my heart and soul and insides over to something else. It felt right to be turning 30 and moving into this decade with a clean slate.” Jenni Konner, long time friend and collaborator of Dunham’s who also directed the season five finale, has...

HBO Takes 6 More 2016 Emmys for a Grand Total of 22

HBO Takes 6 More 2016 Emmys for a Grand Total of 22

HBO may not have taken many more Emmys, to add to the 16 it won at the Creative Emmys on 09.11, but it grabbed some of the top categories once again. It makes its total stand at twenty-two wins, with FX following with eighteen. Here is the quick list of wins from the 09.18 event hosted by Jimmy Kimmel on ABC. HBO won the two top honors once again and that is a record in itself. The Outstanding Drama Series is GAME OF THRONES and Outstanding Comedy Series goes to VEEP. They held that title last year as well and HBO the only network in the past 40 years (NBC with Cheers & Hill Street Blues) to take both top shows. It also makes GOT the...

‘Girls’ Actor Peter Scolari Nabs An Emmy

‘Girls’ Actor Peter Scolari Nabs An Emmy

Yay, Peter Scolari snagged an Emmy (last week at the Creative Emmys) for his guest work on Girls, but he wasn’t supposed to have gotten it. Peter MacNicol was nominated for his role on VEEP. He was disqualified, however because his role fell out of the boundaries of a guest appearance as he was in over 50% of the season. Oops, that slipped Scolari into contention and looked what happened. Known best on HBO as Hannah Horvath’s ostentatious father Tad,  Peter Scolari has been nominated several times before but finally scored his first win. Tad’s character arc on the show has been, in my opinion, one of the more rewarding...

Movie Review: The Revenant

Movie Review: The Revenant

The Revenant is the most recent movie by Alejandro González Iñárritu. It starts Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, a tracker hired to help a group of trappers hunting in the wilderness for beaver pelts. After a vicious raid by Native Americans, the few surviving trappers need to circle around to get back to their outpost before they’re caught and promptly scalped. Things go south when Hugh is mauled by a bear and has to be carried. Unwilling to risk himself for Glass, the trapper Fitzgerald tries to put Glass out his misery but gets caught by Glass’s son who he in turn, silences. Miraculously, Glass survives through it all with...
