As the long months stretch on between seasons of Game of Thrones, shady internet websites that earn their dubious keep off of their ad revenue from click-bait articles have struck again and manufactured a completely false news story. An experienced fan of George R.R. Martin’s book series, or HBO’s show has probably had a few experiences with internet rumors in the past years. George R.R. Martin Strongly Hints Next Book Will Be Published This Year! Game of Thrones to be Released Early! Season Six to Have Cameo By President Obama! With every slow news day comes a new outlandish claim, a rabid distribution of the story across the internet, and ultimately an increasingly annoyed voice of reason from some higher-up debunking the entire thing. Each time, there is a false report  about Game of Thrones, it seems to grow more complex and believable, and therefore wide-spread. More and more people seem to fall for these rumors, so it should be no surprise that the internet recently became excited about a claim earlier this week that a Game of Thrones movie was in the works.

It’s not the first time that a rumor about a  movie set in Westeros has been circulated. Ever since George R.R. Martin expressed interest in the concept of such a thing, several years ago, gossip websites have revived the idea time and time again, and time and time again, reports of plans for the movies have been shot down as mere falsehoods. This was once again the case, this week, when reports appeared that Martin had made suggestions at an Emmys after-party that a movie was finally, truly the works, a claim that was purportedly confirmed by an anonymous source involved in the movie’s production. Even the most hardened of fans couldn’t help but get excited. Many began to speculate. Would the movie be of Robert’s Rebellion? The arrival in Westeros of the First Men? Something set in the current events taking place in Game of Thrones? Alas, none of it was to be.

George R.R. Martin, an old hand by now at dispelling rumors, took wearily to his blogNot A Blog a few days ago to set things straight. In Martins’ own words: “The idea of ending GAME OF THRONES with one or more major feature films was first floated oh, three or four years ago. Let me say once again: this was NOT MY IDEA. However, I may have been the first one to mention the notion in public — where and how I no longer recall — so somehow I became associated with it.I did say that I liked the idea. Of course I liked the idea. HOw not? This was back in the early days, where we couldn’t even afford to shoot the Battle of the Green Fork and had to knock Tyrion unconscious instead. When the king’s hunting party consisted of four guys on foot walking through the woods. At that time, in that context, the idea of big blockbuster movies with a LORD OF THE RINGS sized budget was powerfully attractive. And the idea is still powerfully attractive. Not just to me, but to many people connected with the show. Actors, directors, producers, writers. How not? It would be a great way to end.Which doesn’t mean it is going to happen. There is great enthusiasm for the notion, sure, but not necessarily from HBO. They are in the TV business, not the feature film business. And those of you with long memories may recall all the rumors about a SOPRANOS movie… a ROME movie… a DEADWOOD movie. Rumors is all they were. And that’s all this one is too, at least for now.”

In summary, a movie is not currently in the works. Martin admits that while the idea is tempting, he is not in charge of such matters, and that any rate, HBO generally makes TV shows–not movies. For now, at least, a Game of Thrones movie is as unlikely as expecting to be able to buy Winds of Winter this Christmas.

Internet rumors spread like wildfire, but they are rarely true. Next time you see a headline that seems too good to be true, think twice before you get your hopes up– it may save George R.R. Martin from wasting time writing yet another blog post, when he could be writing his book.

We’ll have to settle for Game of Thrones season 6 for now.

As someone who took the time to read the books, this is good news for me.

As much as fans would love to see something like this, I just don’t think a movie could do the series justice. There’s too many important characters, too many plots and a budget to consider. I think having the series on HBO each spring with 10 episodes is what works and seems to please everyone all around. Of course, the only proviso that I would like to include is that I wish each season would be 12 episodes, instead of 10, but that’s just me.
