Thanks to WiC, we now have yet more news about casting for the upcoming fourth season of Game of Thrones.

Elizabeth-Webster-240x300-150x150Actress Elizabeth Webster will be portraying Fat Walda Frey, according to her CV. Walda is the granddaughter of Walder Frey, and the new “fat young bride” of Roose Bolton, as mentioned by him in The Rains of Castamere. Her inclusion in the cast seems to suggest that we may be seeing a lot more of Roose.

Lu-Corfield-251x300-150x150Also, Lu Corfield has been cast as the “Mole’s Town madame“. Ms. Corfield will be recognizable from her role as Freya Wilson in BBC’s DoctorsMole’s Town is of course a village south of the Wall where members of the Night’s Watch frequently sneak off to in order to break their chastity vows.

On top of this, WiC reports that:

gameofthrones13_36__1378316025_109.77.138.237-199x300[Their] sources are reporting that Noah Taylor is indeed returning as Locke, and that the Bolton bannerman who took Jaime Lannister’s sword hand will be taking the black with the Night’s Watch in season 4.

Author’s Note: This is significant news, indeed. I am particularly intrigued by the casting of Walda and the rumors about Locke, as it signifies an increase in emphasis on House Bolton in season 4. Things could become very, very interesting if Locke is sent to the Wall. I look forward to seeing it!

Game of Thrones Season 4 will premiere in spring of 2014.  We’ll provide an exact air date here when we have it.

As for season 4 casting in general, there are still a few characters that I am hoping to see introduced (MINOR SPOILERS BELOW):

– Hizdahr zo Loraq (if they have a Meereenese noble meet with Daenerys in a way similar to the Yunkish noble in season 3, it makes sense for that noble to be Hizdahr so they can build him up early)
– Brown Ben Plumm (having him in charge of the Stormcrows would be a way to have an extra battle scene in season 4, and they kind of need him for later. Also, I am especially desperate to see him after the Hoji Fortuna thing last week :P)
– Val (possibly combined with Dalla)
– Aeron Greyjoy (although I could potentially see him being cut)
– Euron Greyjoy (but not Victarion yet. People often forget that Euron crowns himself unopposed for a while before the Kingsmoot)
– Tristifer Botley (combined with Qarl, just so YarAsha has someone to interact with)
– and Bowen Marsh (although I can easily see him being pushed back to season 5, or even as late as season 6. I do like to think he will be introduced in season 4, though, as it would help make Jon’s storyline that much stronger)

I will essentially paraphrase what I said on WiC.net (my full thoughts can be found there):
I am happy to see Walda, I assumed she would be mentioned but never on screen in the show. It also means that we will likely get to see Walder Frey again in episode 2 (although not mentioned here, WiC.net specifies she will be in episode 2). My full theory for Roose in season 4 is in my comment on WiC.net

SPOILERS BELOW

For the mole’s town woman, I would expect her to be in episode 3, or possibly 2 (WiC specifies her episode will be directed by Alex Graves, who is directing 2, 3, 8 and 10). It will likely be a member of the watch informing them of the impending Wildling attack from the south (lead by Tormund), which I expect to happen in episode 5 (my reasoning for this, again, is on WiC.net).

And finally for Locke, I think he will join Alliser and Janos’ little group in imprisoning Jon, and then in scheming in season 5. I am worried that he will take Bowen Marsh’s role in season 6, though. If he replaces Bowen Marsh, it will completely change the Watch’s reason for turning on Jon, and I believe that such a change would be detrimental to the story.

Good, plausible theories all. I would, however, like to see Roose do a bit more than just travel after a certain royal event. Hopefully we can get some substantial interaction between him and Ramsay before the season ends!

I wouldn’t really worry about Locke taking Marsh’s role, though. As much as I disagree with a lot of D&D’s past decisions, I doubt they would disrespect the story that much…I hope. I love that aspect of the story though, my brother and I have endless arguments about whether Marsh and the others were “right” in what they did.

I also love the idea of Locke possibly supporting Jon on account of his bastardy.

SPOILERS BELOW

The problem is that having Roose get back North in season 4 would be to let Theon’s storyline get far too ahead. For Roose, if he was to go to King’s Landing and have a scene (or scenes) with Tywin, that could possibly be the greatest thing ever. As for Theon, my prediction is that in the first few episodes we will have the situation with YarAsha, in the middle we will get a bit more torture, and then in the last half of the season they will hunt Rickon (which would be a way to keep Rickon around and keep Theon busy). That then leaves season 5 for all of his pre-Winterfell and the first half/two thirds of season 6 for his Winterfell stuff.

Overall I am hoping for AFfC+ADwD to take about ~1.5 seasons (varying between 1 and 2 seasons depending on the storyline), so having Roose reach the North this early would require Theon’s stuff to be stretched quite a bit later on. As for Theon specifically, my hope is for Stannis vs the Boltons to be the main climactic even in season 6 episode 9 (possibly along with the Barristan and Quentyn plots), so I hope for his ADwD material to last until mid season 6.

As for the Night’s Watch, I do find the suggestion of Locke supporting Jon very interesting, but based on the way in which he has been written I doubt that they will have him be anything other than an enemy to Jon. As Locke is a Bolton man having him as an antagonist to Jon would also help build the stuff between him and Ramsay. As for Bowen, I am fairly certain that we will be in, but I was very certain that Qhorin Halfhand would be badass and that they wouldn’t possibly miss the opportunity to have their final stand against the Wildlings, but we all known how that went…

Of all the changes Weiss and Benioff made in season 3, the addition of Locke was definitely my favorite. Much better than the Bloody Mummers and The Goat, in my opinion.

Locke is a great character, and Noah Taylor is absolutely nailing it. I like the Mummers in the books, but I do agree that they would come across as ridiculous in the slightly more grounded world of the show.

Cian, I knew you wrote this as soon as I saw the Roose Bolton excitement. ;-)

McElhatton is great as Roose. I’m proud that a fellow Irishman is winning blackened hearts the world over!

I thought the same thing! I was really worried that we wouldn’t see Walda, as Benioff and Weiss wouldn’t cast any female they wouldn’t want to see naked. I’m not being facetious, I really was concerned. This is great news and I can’t wait to see her interact with Roose!

You know what I think might make things interesting? If Locke actually sides with Jon on the Wall, due to Jon’s bastardy and Locke’s hate for highborns. Although that almost definitely won’t happen.
