Never say never. That seems like a rule that True Detective Rust Cohle might live by, right? Well Matthew McConaughey, the actor who masterfully brought that character to life on HBO’s air this year may be having second thoughts.

We’ve reported several times that True Detective was, and always has been planned as an anthology series much like American Horror Story where new characters, settings and stories take over each year. So it stood to reason, and was also confirmed several times by show runners and the actors themselves, that McConaughey and Harrelson wouldn’t return for True Detective season 2.

That having been said, Mr. McConaughey is singing a different tune these days:

“I liked True Detective, the whole series and the experience of making it, so much that I’d be open to doing another one now. At the time, I was looking at six months and not beyond that. I don’t know of a feature film I’d sign for where I’m going to say, ‘If this works, you’ve got me whenever you want me for the next three years’.”

Makes a lot of sense to us! Movie stars have historically been hesitant to even appear on television series let alone commit to the years of filming that a premium drama like this one requires. But with the ratings success and upcoming awards True Detective is sure to win, Matthew and a lot of other stars are beginning to rethink that outlook on television acting.
After all: it’s not TV when it’s HBO.

Last we heard the story, setting and characters for True Detective season 2 were all going to be different with casting to begin this summer.  But that doesnt mean Rust Cohle can’t still be a part of it, right?!  We’ll let you know when we have more concrete news items such as a premiere date, cast or anything else as we know you’re waiting on the edge of your seats for more True Detective.

Until then True Detective Season 1 is on Blu-Ray next week so be sure to grab that and check out the special features if you’re looking for more or watch it on HBO Go whenever you want.

Hell this series has barely gotten started and here I am thinking of its endgame. I don’t think I’d want to see Mr. McC. as other characters; Rust Cohle left too much of an impact to let him go easily; and a Rust cameo could easily be fucked up.

I think that when it is time to make one last season of TRUE DETECTIVE, whenever that is, then Rust and even Marty could wrap up the series for us. I’d be cool with just that.

Yeah I like this idea.
I hope the stories connect somehow. Same universe, different angles each season but maybe all these cults are connected.

They could, hypothetically, always do what American Horror Story has been doing and have the same actors playing different characters in each season.

He’s just saying that he’d love to return not that he will return.
I still very doubt Rust will appear next season.
