Limited Series THE YOUNG POPE Debuts on HBO January 15, 2017

By Jef Dinsmore on Nov 3, 2016 to The Young Pope

HBO has dropped a press release as it starts to shape its Winter 2017 lineup. We now know what the dramatic hour will be once we get into the new year.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 1, 2016 – HBO has confirmed the debut date for the ten-episode limited drama series THE YOUNG POPE, with the first part scheduled to debut SUNDAY, JAN. 15 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT), and the second part the next night, MONDAY, JAN. 16 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT), followed by other episodes subsequent Sundays and Mondays at the same time.

Directed by Paolo Sorrentino, THE YOUNG POPE tells the story of Lenny Belardo, aka Pius XIII, the first American Pope in history. Young and charming, his election seems to be the result of a simple yet effective media strategy on the part of the College of Cardinals. But appearances can be deceptive – above all, in the place where people have chosen the great mystery of God as the compass guiding their existence. That place is the Vatican and those people are the leaders of the Church. And Pius XIII proves to be the most mysterious and contradictory of them all. Shrewd and naïve, ironic and pedantic, primeval and cutting-edge, doubting and resolute, melancholy and ruthless, Pius XIII tries to cross the endless river of human solitude to find a God he can give to mankind. And to himself.

Jude Law stars in the title role; Diane Keaton stars as Sister Mary, a nun from the U.S. now living in Vatican City. The cast also includes Silvio Orlando, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Javier Cámara, Ludivine Sagnier, Toni Bertorelli and James Cromwell.

Among the early critical acclaim for THE YOUNG POPE, Variety said Jude Law is “in top form,” adding that “he delivers the goods,” and noting, “there’s so much fun to be had” in the show, while the Hollywood Reporter called THE YOUNG POPE “amusing, unpredictable and irreverent.”

THE YOUNG POPE is a joint Sky, HBO, CANAL+ production; produced by Wildside; co-produced by Haut et Court TV and MEDIAPRO. Executive producers for Wildside are Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani together with John Lyons.

The link back to the trailer is right here. Now, the only question is what comedic half hours will join it? GIRLS, if you recall, did not debut until March and TOGETHERNESS has since been canceled. We will know soon enough.

So glad there will be a second season. I am just floored with the cast, the acting, the content…it’s been a very long time since something of this caliber has been on HBO. I hope it stays for a while.

How is this a limited series if it has been picked up for a second season ?

TV terminology seems so muddled nowadays, doesn’t it? What is the difference between a ‘limited series’ and a ‘miniseries’ for example. THE YOUNG POPE is ten episodes long just like WESTWORLD so why isn’t it classified as a ‘series’? It all depends on what terminology the network wants to give it. Perhaps HBO thought that THE YOUNG POPE was going to only be one season long and labeled it ‘limited’ for that reason as opposed to the number of episodes it took to tell the story? Thanks for reminding us of the second season so, we can get a post… Read more »
Limited series and mini series are the same thing. Westworld is going to have multiple seasons so that’s why it’s a regular series . It doesn’t matter how many episodes there are in the season as long as it’s one season, it’s a limited series. If it has more than one season, it’s a regular series. Anthology shows are limited series too. But, HBO knows its trying to have a second season but still promoting it as a limited series so maybe HBO doesn’t want to pick it up for a second season bc it’s too expensive. Who knows. They… Read more »

I don’t see a second half-hour, is The Comeback still in play? If Girls really is ready for January, Vice Principals would be another option.
Or they will drop Young Pope 2 episodes at a time, as they do in Europe right now. The Leftovers, The Deuce and Big little Lies also are full-hours that are available to HBO for the ‘pre-GoT’ schedule.

(I expect Crashing & Room 104 to be shows for Saturday & HBO Now, similarly to High Maintenance or Animals.)

I think I am going with CRASHING as the companion to GIRLS. It has been in quiet development for quite a while, appears in a “Coming in 2017” clip & is by GIRLS’ Judd Apatow.
