Jodhi-MayEver since it was announced that Season Five of Game of Thrones would be featuring flashbacks, fans have been excited to see what new insights they may gain into their favorite characters this season. In light of recent casting news, we can look forward to seeing some of Cersei’s past this year. Early in January, many were intrigued to learn that  an actress named Nell Williams had been cast to play a young Cersei, but excitement has reached new heights with the announcement that actress Jodhi May will be joining the cast of Game of Thrones. The actress will be playing the part of Maggy the Frog, a character who has a great influence in Cersei’s past and will certainly be featured in flashbacks.

Readers of the A Song of Ice and Fire series will know that Cersei and a young friend (who has been rumored to have been cast for the show as well) go to visit the fortune teller Maggy the Frog as children. The fortune teller gives a series of chilling prophecies about Cersei’s future which come true again and again, and heavily influence Cersei’s actions.  Although HBO has not officially confirmed these castings, fans are excited that such important parts of the books will not be left out of the show. Cersei is not the only character who has important plot points revealed through flashbacks, and it will be interesting to follow how HBO uses this story-telling device in Season Five.

Flashbacks offer us the opportunity to better understand characters than the show has afforded us before.  Whose past do you hope to get a glimpse of in Season Five? Comment below!

Season 5 will air on April 12th, 2015.  Set your watches, calendars and sun dials.  It’s coming.

I am really keen on the fact that flashbacks are FINALLY going to be shown in Game of Thrones. Adding Maggy the Frog to the upcoming Season is fantastic. Fans are going to see just how wickedly depraved Cersei was from a young age. I can’t wait to see her downfall. As a woman, she could have done so much good for House Lannister and for women’s status in Westeros. But, she chose to be greedy and manipulative in the worst way possible. That’s the thing about Karma, it always catches up to you. Cersei’s downfall is imminent.
