If you never heard of Griselda Blanco you will when HBO Films presents her story with the aid of producer/actress Jennifer Lopez. It has been announced that Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions will spearhead the production (along with LBI Entertainment) and with Lopez herself to star as the drug lord. Blanco became the most powerful female drug lord of all time and we are certain it will be a juicy role to step into.
Griselda Blanco (February 15, 1943 – September 3, 2012), known as La Madrina, the Black Widow, the Cocaine Godmother and the Queen of Narco-Trafficking, was a Colombian drug lord of the Medellín Cartel and a pioneer in the Miami-based cocaine drug trade and underworld during the 1970s and early 1980s. It has been estimated that she was responsible for up to 200 murders while transporting cocaine from Colombia to New York, Miami and Southern California.
Of her Lopez has said, “I’ve been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years. The idea of teaming with HBO felt like the perfect fit for finally bringing Griselda’s story to life.”And if all that is the case this is surely the most transformative and demanding role for Lopez, right? Come on, even at her most serious, she doesn’t look a whole lot like Blanco. She has been known to play tough though; see NBC’s Shades of Blue as evidence.
But this tough? I mean just read some of the facts surrounding the title character. The “Cocaine Godmother” was addicted to “bazooka,” a form of smokeable, unrefined cocaine; she would frequently have orgies with both sexes and force men and women to have sex at gunpoint; and part of her smuggling operation involved custom-made lingerie with special packets designed to hold cocaine. Among her most cherished possessions were reportedly an emerald-and-gold embellished MAC 10 machine pistol, a set of pearls (or, variously, a ring) that formerly belonged to former First Lady of Argentina Eva Perón and last but not least, a tea set once used by Queen Elizabeth, smuggled out of Buckingham Palace and dealt with approximately 3,400 pounds a month!
If Lopez can pull off this production and the notoriously wicked character it would certainly be a boon for HBO and for Lopez’s career. We will keep you posted.
