People_IssaReaPic2-300x188It is safe to say that Issa Rae is doing A-OK at HBO. The network wooed her away from her internet gig and she developed and hit big with INSECURE with costars Jay Ellis and Yvonne Orji. It has been critically acclaimed through its two-season run and that success helped her get a development deal at HBO. And Issa has delivered. She now has two additional projects in development.

Here is a quick description of what we know of each. HIM OR HER is said to be a single camera half-hour which chronicles the dating life of a bisexual black man and the distinctly different worlds and relationships he finds himself in. Sharing as executive producer alongside Rae is Travon Free known as a writer for Full Frontal With Samantha Bee as well as HBO’s ANY GIVEN WEDNESDAY WITH BILL SIMMONS. He is also said to be writing the series as it goes forward.

The other show is a drama hour called SWEET LIFE. It is set in the Windsor Hills section of Beverly Hills, California. The project is said to be a coming of age tale of the well-heeled teens growing up in the LA neighborhood. Rae is teaming up with and Scandal producer Raamla Mohamed to produce and write the series.

Of course, at this early stage, there is no guarantee either show will make it to air but they have a good chance of anything since they are coming from Issa Rae.  If you look at the subjects of each project they clearly look like something that comes from Rae’s creative mind. INSECURE looks at the tricky and sometimes uncomfortable aspects of sex and relationships and with HIM OR HER she can take a bold step to explore those issues from a bisexual’s perspective. That just might be a TV first. Rae’s current series also reflects the black experience in LA and though it is realistically drawn it plays up the comedy. SWEET LIFE would do the same thing but from a more dramatic angle. HBOWatch will follow-up as these projects take shape.
