Indira-Varma__1374774445_93.107.147.228Finally more casting news! According to James Hibberd of EW, English actress Indira Varma has been cast in the role of Ellaria Sand. Ellaria is the paramour of Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne, who was recently announced to be portrayed by Pedro Pascal.

Varma should be familiar to loyal HBO fans, as she portrayed Niobe, the wife of Lucius Vorenus, in Rome. She is also well known in the UK for portraying John Luther’s estranged wife Zoe in BBC’s Luther.

This great news comes at a time of disappointment for many fans, after no concrete news was revealed by the Game of Thrones producers at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Author’s Note: I had hoped for Indira to be cast as Ellaria all along, and actually called it in the comments section of a previous post. Honestly, I’m both in disbelief and delight at this casting. Varma certainly has both the acting skills and beauty to pull off this role brilliantly. Also, since we’re on the topic of Rome alumni, would it be too much to ask for Kevin McKidd to play Jon Connington, Ray Stevenson to play Victarion Greyjoy, and James Purefoy to play Euron Greyjoy?

I thought that Ellaria was supposed to be a great beauty. Varma is attractive, I guess, but it’s been years since Rome. I guess it really doesn’t matter. If Conan Stevens isn’t the Mountain, then the Red Viper scenes are already completely pointless. :(

The problem with this is that the show doesn’t have an infinite budget…

Although he could probably pull off the role, I do NOT want James Purefoy for Euron. As for Mads Mikkelsen, he is caught up with Hannibal. My preferred castings are these:
David Wenham – Euron Greyjoy (he has the acting ability and could pass as an uncle of Alfie Allen)
Ray Stevenson – Victarion Greyjoy (I could see Purefoy in the role, though)
Mark Gatiss – Aeron Greyjoy (I don’t see what else he would be playing, given that he is already finished filming)
Giancarlo Esposito – Brown Ben Plumm
Kevin McKidd – Jon Connington
Ian McNeice – Wyman Manderly. Baron Vladamir Harkonnen as Wyman Manderly just seems perfect
Edward James Olmos – Doran Martell
Aimee Garcia – Arianne Martell
Janina Gavankar – Nymeria Sand
Jamie Campbell Bower – Young Griff

And anything as long as they get on the show:
John Hannah – maybe The Tattered Prince?
Viggo Mortensen (he should have been Mance Rayder. Ciaran Hinds as Mance has been the worst casting in the show by far)

Great casting ideas. David Wenham is an ingenious one, I never even considered him. Also, McNeice would be a brilliant Wyman! “True Northern bread for true Northerners.”

I’m also unsure about Gatiss, but couldn’t he be Bloodraven also? They may have sped Bran’s story up. I’d also love to see Ian McShane in the show somehow, possibly as Randyll Tarly.

WARNING FOR NON-READERS, THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS POST

Although Bloodraven is a possibility, I like to think that they will invent material for Bran this season to stop him from getting too far ahead (although I guess that they could just invent material in season 5 for him). Also, Gatiss didn’t exactly strike me as looking like a Targaryen, let alone an albino one.

As for Ian McShane, I am not familiar with him or his work. However, I have heard him mentioned a lot when it comes to Game of Thrones casting speculation, so he must be quite a good actor.

Agree with all your casting wishes except one: I desperately want Madds Mikkelsen to portray Euron Greyjoy. As I saw in a fan pic, “…and Euron was the maddest of them all…”

Kind of thought the play on Mikkelsen’s name was brilliant! This is great news for GoT fans to celebrate! Only 250 days or so left to go!
