HBOWatch reported on 06.01.12 in a Development Slate report that Hilary Swank had signed on for a production titled MARY AND MARTHA. That movie has now started to film. The movie stars Hilary Swank, Brenda Blethyn and James Woods. It is now filming in both South Africa and in North Carolina.
The movie is being filmed by Philip Noyce, an Australian director, known for such works as Salt, Patriot Games and even an episode of HBO’s LUCK. The screenplay is by writer Richard Curtis who has penned works that have already been on HBO like THE NO. 1 LADIES’ DETECTIVE AGENCY and THE GIRL IN THE CAFE. His latest movie script was War Horse.
The story offers us the lives of two ladies, both mothers, who share a commonality. They both have lost their sons and have both lost them to the same disease
– malaria. Actress Swank (HBO FILM: IRON JAWED ANGELS) plays Mary, a American mother, who takes her son on a trip of a lifetime to Africa where he contracts the disease. Actress Blethyn (HBO FILMS: RKO 281) plays an English woman whose son gets infected while volunteering in Mozambique. As stated in the press release – When the two immensely different women meet in Africa, they bond over their shared personal loss. Forging a deep friendship, they vow to dedicate themselves to the cause of malaria prevention, realizing that, as mothers, they have a responsibility to all the world’s children.
Hilary Swank has been seen filming with James Woods (HBO’s TOO BIG TO FAIL and CITIZEN COHN) in Southport, North Carolina in a home there, plus in a Methodist church. There appears to be no news on what
role James Woods plays in the film.
It is nice to have him and both leading ladies back at HBO. Expect this HBO Film sometime in 2013. HBOWatch will keep you informed.
