Back in March we mentioned that HBO Films: CONFIRMATION had signed on Kerry Washington of ABC’s Scandal to star. The movie, about the Clarence Thomas hearings, will see her as Anita Hill. That case offered America its first look at the issues of sexual harassment in the workplace which all boiled to the surface when Thomas was out to grab a seat as a Supreme Court judge. Joining Washington in the upcoming film is a who’s who of talents taking on the players in this big-arena story. We start off with the key role on the other side of the table. Playing Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas will be Wendell Pierce. Yes, that Wendell Pierce, THE WIRE’s Detective William “Bunk” Moreland and the trombonist, Antoine Batiste from TREME.
Also onboard are Greg Kinnear as VEEP Joe Biden, who was then the Judiciary head who oversaw the hearing; Jeffrey Wright will play Harvard Law professor Charles Ogletree, who represented Hill at the hearing and Jennifer Hudson plays Angela Wright a key witness and co-worker with Thomas. There are more names in the cast as well including actresses Allison Wright as Thomas’s wife, attorney “Ginny” Thomas; Zoe Lister-Jones, who replaces the injured Cobie Smulders as Harriet Grant Chief Counsel to Biden and also Erika Christensen and Grace Gummer. Male supporting roles also include Simon Baker as Senator Orrin Hatch; Eric Stonestreet as Kenneth Duberstein, the man appointed to see that Thomas became a Judge no matter what and Malcolm Gets as Senator Arlen Spector. Also featured is Treat Williams and Peter McRobbie.
It only makes sense that it is a large cast movie as the hearing involved a lot op people on both sides of the table with the Judiciary Committee overseeing the hearings that called in witnesses and drew in many many political and family onlookers. Directing HBO Films: CONFIRMATION is Rick Famuyiwa (pictured), director of Sundance breakout Dope. The script is by Susannah Grant and it is now before the cameras. Look for it late this year or into 2016. Also, if you are really interested check the hearings on YouTube.
