HBO’s “Ahhh” Promos– We List All the Characters!

By Jef Dinsmore on Apr 11, 2017 to Featured Post, HBO News

We know you’ve seen the launch of HBO’s new promos. Everyone is showing them. You know, you couple your stable of talent to spoof aniconic sounds effects and you magically capture the thrill of HBO’s content, or so they hope. It might just take you a second to figure out what is happening in the promos, especially since some of the shots rush by so fast.

The talent appearing, and we’ll break it down on just who they are in a bit, seem for the most part to be in character. And what happens right before every one of these characters appear in their respective shows? We have the HBO intro. You know, the static field upon the screen followed by a choral “Ahh?” Well, here is the character’s interpretation of that moment.

Somehow it is supposed to tie us into the notion that we are all connected to those characters each time the “Ahh” calls us there. Three promos are out now and here is our look at each. Can you name everyone?

WE CAN and, as far as we know, we are the only site to do so!

Version 3 takes a different bent. John Oliver from LAST WEEK TONIGHT, in his own way, rants about the whole thing but gets caught up in it in the end. Here is who appears –

At 04 Marnie Michaels (Williams) from GIRLS with guitar; at 06 is Maeve (Newton) from WESTWORLD passing gas?; at 07 Dinesh (Nanjiani) & Gilfoyle (Starr) from SILICON VALLEY are still at it; at 07 Joe Krutel (Corddry) from BALLERS jerks out one; at 08 Hannah Horvath (Dunham) from GIRLS has had enough; at 09 Selina Myers (Loius-Dreyfus) is just tired; at 09 Erlich (Miller) from SILICON VALLEY is borderline bored; at 10 Gary from VEEP has gone nuts; after Oliver talks then at 15 Kevin Garvey (Theroux) of THE LEFTOVERS gives us static; at 16 Frances (Parker) from DIVORCE followed by Leon (Smoove) from CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM follow suit; at 17 Spencer S. (Johnson) from BALLERS combines both; after Oliver butts in again at 23 The Guy (Sinclair) from HIGH MAINTENANCE chokes through one; then Oliver sets up the GAME OF THRONES cast (well not everyone) starting at 33 with Cersei Lannister (Headey) followed by Jon Snow (Harington), Tyrion Lannister (Dinklage), Brienne of Tarth (Christie), Bran Stark (Hempstead-Wright), Tormund (Hivju), Missandei (Emmanuelle), Sandor Clegane (McCann), Varys (Hill), Hodor (Nairn), Theon Greyjoy (Allan), Davos Seaworth (Cunningham), Sansa Stark (Turner), Arya Stark (Williams), Daenerys Targaryen (Clarke) which takes us to Oliver still talking and at 42 we get Jaime Lannister (Coster-Waldau); at 46 is Elmo from SESAME STREET still perky followed by Issa (Rae from INSECURE equally as perky; at 48 is Jonah Ryan (Simons) from VEEP; at 49 is Reggie (Brown) from BALLERS groovin’; it; at 50 is Dolores (Wood) from WESTWORLD feelin’ it; then cut back to Oliver to give the final “Ahh” then static.
