HBO-2015-Oscar

No, not for Game of Thrones, of course. HBO, from time to time picks up an Academy Award for their documentary films.  We review each and every one here at HBO Watch so be sure to check those out if you haven’t in the past.  Last night HBO won both “Best Documentary” and “Best Documentary Short”.  Can’t do any better than that in this field!  Here are the details on the big HBO win last night:

The HBO Documentary Films presentation CITIZENFOUR received the Academy Award in the category of Best Documentary Feature, and the HBO Documentary Films presentation CRISIS HOTLINE: VETERANS PRESS 1 received the Academy Award in the category of Best Documentary Short at the 87th annual Academy Awards, presented at the 2015 ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Feb. 22.

CITIZENFOUR is a real-life international thriller that unfolds by the minute, following director Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald’s remarkable encounters with Edward Snowden in a Hong Kong hotel room as he hands over classified documents that provide evidence of mass indiscriminate and illegal invasions of privacy by the National Security Agency (NSA).

CITIZENFOUR debuts tonight, MONDAY, FEB. 23 (9:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

RADiUS presents a Praxis Films production; in association with Participant Media and HBO Documentary Films; in coproduction with Bertha Foundation, BRITDOC Circle, Channel 4, Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) and Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR); directed, filmed and produced by Laura Poitras; edited and produced by Mathilde Bonnefoy; produced by Dirk Wilutzky; co-producers, Katy Scoggin, Kirsten Johnson; executive producers, Steven Soderbergh, Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, David Menschel, Tom Quinn. For HBO: supervising producer, Sara Bernstein; executive producer, Sheila Nevins.

The timely documentary CRISIS HOTLINE: VETERANS PRESS 1 spotlights the traumas endured by America’s veterans, as seen through the work of the VA’s Veterans Crisis Line trained responders as they provide immediate intervention and support in hopes of saving the lives of service members who are struggling or contemplating suicide.

Debuting on HBO in Nov. 2013, CRISIS HOTLINE: VETERANS PRESS 1 was presented in association with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America; directed by Ellen Goosenberg Kent; produced by Dana Perry; edited by Geof Bartz, A.C.E.; supervising producer, Jacqueline Glover; executive producer, Sheila Nevins.  It’s available on DVD now if you’re interested.

I can’t wait to watch Citizenfour – it looks so interesting! Also, Laura Poitras has really scary eyes. I’m sure, a well deserved Oscar!
