LEFTOVERS

HBOWatch has had its eye on this project and so has HBO. Evidently the network has liked what it has seen of Damon Lindelof’s THE LEFTOVERS to commit it to series. A ten episode Season One has been given the greenlight and is hoped to air in 2014.

LindelofCo-written by Lindelof and Tom Perrotta based on Perrotta’s book the project takes place after the Rapture happens. It is the story of the people who didn’t make the cut and a world that never will be the same as a consequence. The work has taken a smooth ride to the screen. We first reported on it on 06.30.12. The rest of 2012 must been spent in writing the screenplay, then on 03.14.13 we announced that a pilot was ordered to be shot and on 05.09.13 Peter Berg came on board as director. Finally on 07.02.13  we had reports that the pilot was in production and we listed the main characters in that post. Again that cast is – Justin Theroux,  Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, Chris Zylka, Margaret Qualley, Carrie Coon, Emily Meade, Amanda Warren, Ann Dowd, Michael Gaston, Max Carver, Charlie Carver, Annie Q, Paterson Joseph and Brad Leland.

All apparently has gone well and HBO has liked what it saw to now have the production move forward. By this time next year we could have THE LEFTOVERS on the screen. If you cannot wait until then and are one of those you like to consult the source material before the TV show comes to life here is a [amazon_link id=”B0085RZGS6″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]link to purchase [/amazon_link]the 2011 novel for yourself.

Just picked up the book after I heard the news, even though I’m expecting some fairly major changes (considering the length of the book, expansions may be the better term) from the source material. Anyway, talented cast, talented director (Berg directed the pilot episode of Friday Night Lights, so I wonder if they’ll share a general aesthetic), and I think that – based on the log line of the book, and the little that I’ve had a chance to read – this kind of material definitely suits Lindelof’s sensibilities as a writer. I think a lot of people might be surprised at how little mystery (in regards to The Rapture, itself) there is in the show, if it ends up adopting that tone from the novel.

Anyway, excited to see this one get the green-light. I just read that The Missionary isn’t gonna’ go ahead at HBO, though with the success of Homeland on Showtime, and the relative success of The Americans on FX, perhaps that’s for the best as all three projects share a lot thematically (at least on the surface), so it may have been hard to distinguish the project as something other than a ‘spy show’. Perhaps, instead, HBO is more interested in a project David Simon had proposed, focusing on the early days of the Central Intelligence Agency, titled Legacy of Ashes. I recall reading about that not too long ago on Simon’s blog. I also think they’ll make sure both the Martin Scorsese rock & roll project, as well as David Milch’s The Money end up going to air, which could potentially make for a line-up of shows that we haven’t had since the days The Wire/The Sopranos/Deadwood/Rome/Sex & The City/Six Feet Under.

This is on my list for sure. I’m so glad it’s a go!
