HBO Miniseries: OLIVE KITTRIDGE to Debut Later this Year

By Jef Dinsmore on Mar 14, 2014 to HBO News

Kittridge_NovelHBO has not forgotten its long-form films or miniseries and neither has HBOWatch. MILDRED PIERCE and PARADE’S END were the last two minis to air and in the future is MASTERS OF THE AIR and the MLK piece. But coming up yet this year is the HBO Miniseries: OLIVE KITTRIDGE. There are few images from the work at this point besides some casting shots, like Bill Murray (pictured), and location shots.  Just as a reminder to HBO aficionados here is the official Press Release about the project.

FRANCES MCDORMAND AND RICHARD JENKINS STAR IN OLIVE KITTERIDGE, A FILM BY LISA CHOLODENKO; AN HBO MINISERIES PRESENTATION OF A PLAYTONE PRODUCTION IN ASSOCIATION WITH AS IS; BASED ON ELIZABETH STROUT’S PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING NOVEL; WRITTEN BY JANE ANDERSON; TOM HANKS, GARY GOETZMAN, FRANCES MCDORMAND AND JANE ANDERSON EXECUTIVE PRODUCE; BILL MURRAY, JOHN GALLAGHER, JR., PETER MULLAN, ROSEMARIE DEWITT AND ZOE KAZAN CO-STAR.

Academy Award winner Frances McDormand (“Fargo,” “North Country”) and Academy Awardnominee Richard Jenkins (HBO’s SIX FEET UNDER) star in the HBO MKittridge_OnSetiniseries drama OLIVE KITTERIDGE, a film by Academy Award-nominated director Lisa Cholodenko (“The Kids Are All Right,” “Laurel Canyon”).

Based on Elizabeth Strout’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name and written by Emmy-winner Jane Anderson (HBO’s  THE POSITIVELY TRUE ADVENTURES OF THE ALLEGED TEXAS CHEERLEADER-MURDERING MOM), this miniseries recently completed production in Massachusetts for debut later this year.

The four-part drama tells the poignantly sweet, acerbically funny and devastatingly tragic story of a seemingly placid New England town wrought with illicit affairs, crime and tragedy, told through the lens of Olive (Frances McDormand), whose wicked wit and harsh demeanor mask a warm but troubled heart and staunch moral center. Richard Kittridge_MurrayJenkins portrays Olive’s husband, Henry. The supporting cast of OLIVE KITTERIDGE features Golden Globe winner Bill Murray (“Lost in Translation”) as Jack Kennison, a widower befriended by Olive; John Gallagher, Jr. (HBO’s THE NEWSROOM) as Christopher, Olive and Henry’s son; Emmy nominee Peter Mullan (“Top of the Lake”) as Jim O’Casey, a fellow teacher at Olive’s school; Rosemarie DeWitt (“Mad Men”) as Rachel Coulson, a shut-in who is one of Henry’s customers at the pharmacy; Zoe Kazan (“Ruby Sparks”) as Denise Thibodeau, who works at the pharmacy; and Ann Dowd (“Side Effects”) as Kitteridge family friend Bonnie.

Though we have known most of these facts before consider this a reminder that those who like this novel don’t have long to wait. The next time HBOWatch mentions it will probably when there is a trailer to show and/or a premiere date. Stay tuned.

Definitely looking forward to this one. As for when it will premiere, I would guess that it’ll occupy the space between the final season of True Blood and the first season of The Leftovers, but before the final seasons of Boardwalk Empire and The Newsroom.

Which makes me wonder if we’ll also be getting something of a ‘comedy block’ prior to the latter two shows airing as well. Since we know that The Brink, Ballers, and Togetherness have all been given season orders, and Getting On has been renewed for a second season, I wouldn’t be surprised if this happened.

With Last Week Tonight with John Oliver airing at 11:00 P.M. on Sunday nights, HBO needs to maintain at least two hours of original programming every Sunday (for the most part). So as of now…

    True Detective
    Girls
    Looking

    Game of Thrones
    Veep
    Silicon Valley

    True Blood
    The Leftovers

    The Brink
    Ballers
    Togetherness
    Getting On

    Boardwalk Empire
    The Newsroom

…that’s one heck of a line-up. Throw in a couple original films, the mini-series detailed in this post, and all of the sports programs, docs, etc., and HBO looks to be having one of their best years for original programming since the early to mid 2000’s.
