Here is an HBO Film I’m sure most of you haven’t seen though it is not from that long ago.  It is 2006’s MRS. HARRIS and it runs at the foMrs.Harrisllowing times: on HBO, Monday 01.07 at 7:15 pm (ET/PT); on HBO2, Tuesday, 01.08 at 10:00 pm and on HBO Signature Wednesday, 01.09 at 11:00 pm and a few other times. Maybe this post will convince you to catch it as it airs again.

MRS. HARRIS is a critically acclaimed film that HBO has decided to show again in light of the death of its subject matter. Mrs. Harris of the title is Jean Harris who had a stressful relationship with Dr. Herman Tarnower, who created The Scarsdale Diet. She was his lover of fourteen years and though he appeared to be quite a womanizer (particularly of his secretary Lynne) he promised to marry Jean. The Dr. reneged on that promise and Jean Harris, painted as distraught and obsessive, allegedly took action.  She contended that Dr. Tarnower was shot while the two wrestled with a gun that she intended to use to kill herself.

The movie actually opens with that final moment and then via a series of flashbacks the story rebuilds to find out how it all led to that crime or accideBenning_asHarrisnt. Ben Kingsley played Doctor Tarnower, Annette Bening is Jean Harris and Lynne is played by Chloe Sevigny of HBO’s BIG LOVE. Also in the piece you will see performances by Cloris Leachman, Frances Fisher and Michael Gross. As for many an HBO movie MRS. HARRIS received twelve Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Made-For-TV Movie, Outstanding Actor in a Made-for-TV Movie and Outstanding Actress in Made-for-TV Movie categories. It also was touted at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards that year. The result was a movie that plays on many levels mixing some black comedy with a murder mystery and holding it up through it all is Annette Bening’s performance.

Again, this movie replays again on HBO upon the death of Jean Harris. And dying with her is the truth of whether it was murder or truly an accident. I won’t reveal here if she was found innocent or guilty or whether she even served time or not. If you want that answer hit your favorite online encyclopedia or better yet enjoy HBO Films: MRS. HARRIS across the HBO channels.

You have a movie, Mrs. Harris, that people want to see. So why not run it????

HBO has a long catalog of HBO Films presentations and sadly, the older ones just don’t get recycled on the service; no reason for why they shouldn’t really. HBO Max could surely pad its offerings with works such as the title you seek.

MRS. HARRIS, with Annette Benning & Ben Kingsley is from 2005. It was reaired in 2013 but is no long gone. Find it on DVD.

Unfortunately it was only airing a limited run and not the entire month. It is not even on HBOGo. Youtube has it in segments though.
