The-Missionary-204x300HBO has just given a pilot order to a Cold War era spy drama entitled THE MISSIONARY. Up for the lead in the project is Aaron Paul probably best known for his award-winning turn in AMC’s Breaking Bad. The lead character is described simply as a missionary in the 1960’s who gets involved in the CIA and the spy game in the hotbed city of Berlin.  Screenwriter Charles Randolph and New Yorker writer and author Malcolm Gladwell had been fostering a concept and are now writing the piece.

The production team behind the show is quite familiar with HBO. Producers Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg, who have already brought BOARDWALK EMPIRE, IN TREATMENT, HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA and ENTOURAGE to the channel, will bring the espionage packed series to life. Actor Paul is no stranger to HBO either as he appeared as Sarah Hendrickson’s husband on BIG LOVE.

We’ll have more on this new HBO series as news breaks.

Writing for this show or any other is crucial to its success. I did some investigating for those interested on THE MISSONARY’s writers.

Malcolm Gladwell is a staff writer for The New Yorker and author of four novels that have all been on the Bestsellers list. His works often focus on socialogical and psychological pattrns of human nature. That sounds like two themes relevant in the world of Cold War espionage.

Charles Randolph pened such movies as THE INTERPRETOR with Nicole Kidman and LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS.

I guess we will have to see how it plays out. If nothing else people seem happy that Aaron Paul is coming to HBO.

Aaron Paul is the best thing about Breaking Bad, so while I am sad there will be no more Jesse Pinkman soon, I will watch the hell out of this new show. I just hope the writing is decent, do not know these guys.

Not too sure about the writers behind it, but anyone who watches Breaking Bad knows that Aaron Paul is one of the best actors in television. So assuming the writing is worthy, I’d love for it to get picked up.
