HBO Creative Arts Emmy Wins 2016

2016Emmys-300x174The main Television Academy event, the Primetime Emmys, is not until Sunday, September 18, but the Creative Arts Emmys had its nights to shine over the course of two nights on Saturday September 10 and Sunday September 11 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. These awards are the technical and guest roles awards that are not part of the presentation of the big Best Actor, Actress and Show categories broadcast worldwide next week. According to the Academy site the award focuses primarily on key technical disciplines and behind-the-scenes crafts of television production, such as production design, casting, cinematography, costumes, hairstyling, makeup, lighting design, music, picture editing, sound editing and mixing, special visual effects, stunts, title design and more.

At the Saturday show, the focus was on scripted programming, with Sunday honoring unscripted and documentary programming. HBO was, of course, nominated and present at the Creative Emmys. On Saturday night alone HBO garnered 11 honors, mostly for GAME OF THRONES with FX close behind with 10 due partly to The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

At the podium during Sunday’s ceremony HBO picked up –

Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking:
JIM: THE JAMES FOLEY STORY (tied with A&E’s Cartel Land)

Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series:
LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER

Outstanding Picture Editing For Variety Programming:
LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER

Outstanding Picture Editing For an Unstructured Variety Program:
PROJECT GREENLIGHT – “Accident Waiting to Happen”

Outstanding Sound Mixing For a Non-fiction Program (single or multi-camera)
VICE SPECIAL REPORT – “Fighting ISIS”

Though nominated THE KNICK, SILICON VALLEY, LEMONADE and VINYL & others did not win in their categories. Even VEEP and GAME OF THRONES lost out in such categories as Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Cinematography. HBO FILMS: ALL THE WAY and LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER also lost in those directing categories. However, there is still the Primetime Emmys, for which HBO content is nominated 94 times. We will have to wait until then to see what other awards are bestowed.  Here is a reminder of those nominees; you can be sure that we will announce those winners as well.
