People_BenjaminCoreyJones-150x150Anthony Hemingway, who directed works like the remake of the Manchurian Candidate, Will Smith’s Ali, and episodes of HBO’s TREME, THE NEWSROOM and TRUE BLOOD has a comedy that HBO is interested in.  It is entitled BROS which is written by up and coming Ben Cory Jones (pictured) who penned the work based on his real life as a gay black with his straight brothers. BROS focuses on these three siblings as they relate to each other and deal with their luck or lack of it in dating and love. The concept was reworked from an earlier vision from writer Jones that was then known as Bros Before Hos.

In an interview with Indiewire Jones states –

Bros Before Hos isn’t a black story or a gay story — it’s a family story about three brothers, who happen to be black, and one who happens to be gay. There seem to be more stories that deal with the interior lives of black women, but it’s hard to find stories that deal with the interior lives of black men. We’re either thugs or athletes, but there’s so much more to who we are that falls in between that spectrum. It’s ironic that in 2014, and even with a black president, one of the hardest things to be in this country right now is a young black man.”

Director Hemingway commented –

“This kind of material resonates deeply within both Mark and I as African-American men, as production friendly filmmakers and as industry professionals. We both know so many people, not just African-Americans, who question why there isn’t more programming that reflects the growing diversity of the American experience, so it’s incredibly satisfying to be a part of something that might otherwise be overlooked or ignored.”

Evidently there is a clip we can share from that precursor show. Remember, this is a test film for the larger series that could be BROS. Take a look.

So, what do you think? HBO is diverse with the millennial GIRLS cast and the gay lifestyle is what it is about on LOOKING so why shouldn’t the black male get his stand. Yeah, yeah I know they say it is about family and not a ‘black story’ but, come on it is about both and that’s okay. We will wait to see if BROS follows through.
