Hold on to your gold dragons because you’re about to be enticed to spend them like a Lannister vacationing in the Summer Isles.  HBO has just announced a new and improved version of Game of Thrones on Blu-Ray. The new “Steelbook Collection” features box art created by the same team that created the opening credits intro we’ve all come to love.

Each Steelbook showcases a specific location that is significant to that season and includes usable magnets on packaging featuring Game of Thrones sigils and symbols:

  • Season 1 packaging features Winterfell, where fans are introduced to the Stark family in the series premiere. The magnet for Season 1 is the direwolf sigil of House Stark.
  • In Season 2, the Lannisters’ influence is keenly felt from the Iron Throne and their sigil is included on packaging set in King’s Landing, where the season’s pivotal Battle of the Blackwater occurs.
  • Season 3 features the magnet sigil of House Frey and their ancestral seat of the Twins-the location of this season’s infamous Red Wedding.
  • Season 4 features the icy landscape of Castle Black and the Wall, where the brothers of the Night’s Watch fend off an army of wildlings from the far north. The magnet for this season features a crow and Jon Snow’s sword, Longclaw.

The set also features a “Dolby Atmos” sound remix which requires new speakers and AV equipment to truly appreciate but is backwards compatible on older Dobly home theaters: it promises to redefine your listening experience:

“Dolby Atmos places and moves sounds and music anywhere in the room, including overhead, creating a captivating experience that brings entertainment alive all around the audience. With the new Steelbook set, fans can hear Daenerys’s dragons swoop past them and feel the soaring score rise and fall around them.”

There are no, new special features or documentaries included in these sets and at a retail price of $79.98 (though most outlets will offer heavy discounts from the MSRP) that may disappoint some fans. The sets may be limited in some way but HBO didn’t say as much in their press release.

Seasons 1 & 2 will be made available on November 3rd, just in time for the holiday.

No Game of Thrones Season 5 on Blu-Ray details have been released yet for either the Steelbook collection or the normal version. We do anticipate a Winter 2016 Blu-Ray and DVD release date for the normal Game of Thrones Season 5 set.  You can pre-order that here.

This is most likely what the final, full-series collection will look like in the end. So if you were worried about your boxes matching on your shelf ths is probably the best set to pick up.  We’ll give you a link to pre-order them once Amazon has one up.

Is there any release date for the Season 5 Blu Ray Steelbook as you have released the normal Blu Ray and DVD box sets.

this is complete BS. I bought the first two seasons with the intent to re watch the entire series in atmos before the new season came out. There must have been a screw up somewhere because it makes no sense to have seasons 1,2,5 in atmos but not 3 and 4… I tried watching season 3 through HBO Go on appleTV but it looks and sounds like garbage.

I purchased Season 1 & 2 steelbooks back in November last year. Great quality, although the magnets could have been metal for the price instead of plastic!

But when are Seasons 3, 4, & 5 in the set coming?

No point collecting the steelbook versions unless HBO will continue these editions each season…

A few days ago, Amazon finally put seasons 3 & 4 of this Steelbook set up for preorder. Release date 6th June in the UK.

Still wondering if HBO will continue these Steelbook’s each new season?
No sign of a Season 5 Steelbook yet in this Steelbook set, and season 6 has already started… Come on HBO!

“The set also features a “Dolby Atmos” sound remix which requires new speakers and AV equipment”

No, Dolby Atmos does not require “new speakers”. There are SOME speakers that are designed to mimic the installation of ceiling mounted speakers by reflecting sound off the ceiling, but these are neither required, nor, in most cases, desirable. Better wording would be “additional speakers”.

If you already have an existing theater, the addition of a pair (or two) of in-ceiling speakers and a new AVR or pre-amp is all you will need. It should be noted that all but the most entry level AVRs this year are supporting Atmos, so it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

The Atmos presentation adds such depth and dimension to an already impressive series. It’s so wonderful having great audio to match the amazing cinematography.

Well now!!! Happy Canada Day to me! There goes the almost non-existent balance on my Visa, though. It’s worth it! :)
