LOS ANGELES, Dec. 12, 2013 – HBO received 9 Golden Globe nominations, the most of any television network this year for the 13th year in a row, for the upcoming 71st annual Golden Globe Awards, which were announced today in Los Angeles. The Golden Globe Awards will be presented Jan. 12 in Los Angeles.

HBO’s Golden Globe nominations this year include:

4 nominations for “Behind the Candelabra,” including Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, 2 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (Matt Damon, Michael Douglas) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (Rob Lowe).

2 nominations for “Girls,” including Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical (Lena Dunham).

2 nominations for “Phil Spector,” including Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (Al Pacino) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (Helen Mirren).

1 nomination for “Veep”:  Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

…aaaand nothing for Game of Thrones….  ouch.   We’re also wondering where the nominations for Boardwalk Empire and/or The Newsroom are considering they both won Emmys this year.  Here are ALL the nominees if you’re interested.

HBO is no stranger to Golden Globes as they took home a handful last year and every year in recent memory.  Congratulations to all of the nominees and good luck to Lena and Julia (who are actually going head to head for the same award!)  We’ll report on the winners in January.

UPDATE: HBO released the following video to highlight their nominees:

Pretty appalled at the complete absence of any nominations for GOT and Boardwalk, to be honest. Really strange, especially considering how popular GOT is (regardless of whether people like it or not).

Ya particularly after the Emmys loved The Newsroom, BWE and Game of Thrones… It is the Hollywood foriegn press so I think they have a little bit of a different perspective on TV. Not the same timing as in the USA, not the same tastes etc. Lots of competition this year with Netflix and even Starz getting into the premium content game but still.
