AmericanIdiotThe American punk rock band Green Day, comprised of vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and current drummer Tre Cool, have been doing alright by their 2004 punk rock opera “American Idiot.” The concept album went on to become an acclaimed adaptation on the Broadway stage and is about to become an HBO Films presentation. That’s pretty sweet.

AMERICAN IDIOT is all its guises is about modern American society and the turmoil and angst caused by a world in upheaval and the idiot ruler at the center of it all and a trio of youths disgruntled by it all. It was a serious and raucous comment of the times for sure. It success escalated from there when in 2010 it became a musical on Broadway and went on to be nominated for Best Musical. Billie Jo Armstrong himself did a stint as the lead for a while.

Now it appears he will also take on the mantle of the character St. Jimmy for the HBO adaptation. He had this to say regarding the film:

“We’ve got a green light from HBO. The script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.”

Playtone, a prolific production house for HBO content will produce with Michael Mayer, the stage musical’s director behind the camera. If you need a little taste of AMERICAN IDIOT how about this clip –

At this time it there aren’t any more details than that. Surely if it is an HBO movie adaptation, however, it is just not a filming of a staged version of the musical. If it were then there would not be any rewrites necessary and it would be an HBO Special. The story, if it is like the musical takes place in “Jingletown, USA,” so, the film will be shot in some section of American suburbia. It takes place in the streets and in the homes of the boys of the story, Johnny, Will and Tunney. This real setting will be the backdrop for the story and more dialogue may be placed within that story beyond the song set of the album. All the songs should be there though like “Jesus of Suburbia,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” the title track and more.

A musical from HBO, now that’s different and AMERICAN IDIOT seems a great choice. We’ll watch for it.

This is VERY exciting. The music videos and the overall “feel” of that album was very cinematic and as a long time fan of Greenday this is a really interesting prospect. Can’t wait to hear more!
