Right on the heels of the Season 5 casting news, renowned author of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin, has announced that he will not be writing an episode for Game of Thrones Season 5. George has previously written one episode for each of the four past seasons. Depending on your perspective, this could be either good or bad news, as his reasoning is that he wants to focus on completing The Winds of Winter.

The full scoop is over on Vulture, but here are the relevant parts of the transcript:

Which shooting location are you going to choose to visit this season? Seems like a tough one since you’ve added another warm, exotic locale to the list, with Spain subbing in for Dorne.
I don’t know. I might make it over there early next year, but I’ve got to finish the book The Winds of Winter. So I’m making the trips I’m already obligated to make, but I’m not adding any new trips at this time. So I don’t think I’m going to do a set visit this year, sadly.

Are you still going to write an episode?

Not this year, no — once again because I have this book to finish.

There are also a few more tidbits on this (including a short video interview) over at Entertainment Weekly.

Game of Thrones returns in Spring 2015. We’ll provide an exact air date when we have it.

I actually think that the book is not the main reason. I don’t think he is really thrilled with the way the show is being adapted and he doesn’t want his name on it anymore. They all looked very tense at the Comic-Con panel. You could feel the tension in waves. Bennioff and Weiss I think that you have taken one too many liberties with Mr. Martins glorious work. And this is one way of him showing his displeasure. Just my opinion.

I do agree that there was an uneasy air of awkwardness and tension in the air during the Comic-Con panel, not to mention some of the incredibly awkward “questions” the fans asked.

if you see many of the 1 on 1 interviews he has he is very supportive of the show and D&D’s direction. They agree all adamant that the books and the show are their own and need to stand on their own.

I guess this is a double-edged sword. He could be feeling the pressure of Winds of Winter not being finished yet. It couldn’t have been an easy decision to make.

I’d say he’s just started to feel how real the fire under his ass has become.
