It’s been a possibility ever since the show began but now it has been confirmed–the HBO’s Game of Thrones will out-pace and spoil George R.R. Martin’s currently unfinished series, A Song of Ice and Fire upon which the show is based. While many have suspected that this will be the case, due to Martin’s slow writing pace contrasted with the show’s tight schedule, the writers of the Game of Thrones, David Benioff and Dan Weiss recently confirmed that the show will indeed spoil the books at a recent panel discussion at the Oxford Union.  The writers suggested that many aspects of Martin’s unpublished books will be spoiled in upcoming seasons. Moreover, the writers stated that they may deviate from the plot in some story-lines. Ultimately, however, and most distressingly to fans of the books, the writers of the show hinted that the HBO show will probably reveal the end of George R.R. Martins’ epic story before the author’s own books do.

A fan favorite character, Jon Snow once said, “Two roads may lead to the same castle,” and this seems to be the case with Game of Thrones  and  A Song of Ice and Fire. Both the show and the series are heading towards an eventual completion, but the two tellings of the story may look very different, due to difference in mediums and deviations that the show writers are making from the George R.R. Martin’s original story.  One of the show’s writers, David Benioff was quoted as saying, “Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination. ”

As Season Five approaches, many fans who are readers of A Song of Ice and Fire will find themselves making a difficult choice. Will they continue to watch the HBO show, even as it out-paces the books, and have major events from the books spoiled, or will they put aside the show and wait the long wait for George R.R. Martin’s next book–only then learning what happens next in the story? Either decision has it’s difficulties, but in the age of the internet where spoilers are almost impossible to avoid, attempts at staying away from any new plot developments on the show will be extremely difficult. For those who truly want to learn of events first from George R.R. Martin’s books, the struggle to avoid the outpouring of spoilers that flood social media, news websites, and even friendly conversations will be a mighty one.

Will you continue watching the show or will you wait for the books? Comment below and be sure to watch the show on April 12.

I started by reading books long before show was even hinted at, but I will watch the shows without waiting for books to catch up. At the rate George RR writes, I could be dead before he finishes!

Yeah, there’s no way I’ll be able to avoid it, and honestly the books take far too long to finish. I’ll still read them in the end and probably enjoy them more than the show, but I’m six years in and just want to know what’s coming ASAP.

Goddammit! I don’t even now!! :O I mean I started with the series but then finished the books before the 3rd series. I love both and they haven’t spoiled each other – the series is different but in a good way – I’m thinking this series I will watch but after reading the next book I will wait until the last book is released and then go for the last series. Can’t wait! ^_^

I don’t see anything wrong with this. The Walking Dead is doing a similar thing in that, even though right now it is still within the writings of Kirkman, the plot of the show and the plot of the graphic novels take different roads in many ways. Characters that are not killed off in the graphic novels are killed off in the show. New characters that don’t exist in the graphic novels are in the show. It’s fun to see the differences, it’s kind of like a choose your own adventure novel. I think it will be interesting to see how the writers of AGOT the show, change things from the novels.

At least give us Winds of Winter before the next season. I can’t handle two books being spoiled…
