UPDATE: Here it is!

Game of Throne fans have a lot to look forward to while they wait for the new season; Imax showings of two episodes, a new trailer, and most recently announced, a special featurette  about the filming of Season Five which will be released in February 8th (tonight!).

While we all know you’d rather be watching the show itself, the special titled Game of Thrones: A Day in the Life will give you an opportunity to get your GOT fix as you get up close and personal with your favorite actors and learn about what goes into making the show you love. According to Entertainment Weekly, the thirty minute long special will cover a day in the life of all three different Game of Thrones sets.  Here’s a little teaser for the teaser, if you will:

In it, you’ll get to travel the world to witness what takes place behind the scenes. Hopefully, we’ll gain not only a greater sense of appreciation of hard work behind every episode, but also few tantalizing tidbits about what we can expect from upcoming episodes. Already, a few small hints have been revealed in the promotional episode that HBO released. In addition to a few telling location shots of the Wall and Essos, Daenerys and Cersei can be seen briefly as in addition as what appears to be Jaime fighting a Sandsnake.  It’s exciting to anticipate getting to see what goes on behind the scenes as well as a few more quick shots of Season Five.

So set your DVRs to record Game of Thrones: A Day in the Life at 7:30 on HBO.  Tonight is a big one for HBO’s schedule anyway with this special, Jinx, Girls, Looking, Togetherness and John Oliver taking over Sunday nights again.  While the NFL is away, premium cable will play.

Read on for thoughts about the special feature.

After the release of the first trailer, the hype for Season Five of Game of Thrones has been growing ever stronger and HBO isn’t letting it die down. Today, HBO released a special 25 minute feature which offered tantalizing view into what happens behind the scenes of the TV show we have come to love. Along with new insights into what we can expect from the upcoming season, we also got the chance to see see all the effort that goes into the show.

The featurette focuses on a day in the life of three of Game of Throne’s filming locations–Croatia, Northern Ireland and Spain. We get a special look at a tiny portion of the cumulative effort that takes place between seasons and behind the scenes to create the show we know and love. Sometimes we get so lost in the appreciation of the story of Game of Thrones that we forget the thousands of actors, directors, producers, and extras that make Westeros come to life, and it was good to be reminded of all of their hard work as we look forward to the new season. That being said, for the amount of advertisement this feature received, it was not the most exhilarating of looks into Game of Thrones. Although it was interesting to see what takes place behind the scenes, the feature lacked a certain drive which left it feeling stale and over-long. All, in all, I’m not sure if this wouldn’t have worked better as bonus content for when the Season Five DVD is released, rather than as promotional content. Despite my excitement to see the feature, I was left feeling a little disappointed by the lack of any real direction or information in the feature.

Even if the A Day in The Life wasn’t incredibly informative, we gleaned a few new facts about the upcoming season. Mainly, we learned more about what will become main locations in the upcoming season –Dorne, King’s Landing, and surprisingly, Hardhome. While King’s Landing is an old friend at this point, and we’ve known to expect Dorne in the new season for a while, it came as a surprise to learn that the show will be heavily featuring a location barely touched upon in the books. For those who are unfamiliar with the finer points of Westeros’ geography, Hardhome is Wildling settlement located far beyond the Wall. In the books, we never visit Hardhome but know of it as a location where many Wildlings flee to after Mance Rayder’s defeat. While the Wildlings hope to find safety, there, they soon are rumored to have found quite the opposite. While Hardhome is not a location that any main characters visit in the books, it seems that the show will be changing that. While it is difficult to tell whether or not this is merely conjecture, one certainly wonders if Jon Snow will find himself in this new locale as the season progresses.

Overall, Game of Thrones: A Day in the Life won’t give you any vital new information you didn’t already know, but it will give you a deeper appreciation for the workings of the show. Even as April seems so very far away, it is important to remember the months of dedication and talent that have gone into creating the newest season of Game of Thrones. Without the magic that takes place behind the scenes, Westeros could never come to life, and as we wait to see the world we have grown to love, it is good to take a moment to recognize the enormous effort that goes into the creation of every location, costume, set, and scene.

Watched it. Like washing your hair, all I did was watch, soak in the details, scribble down stuff and repeat. If you don’t get these tiny glimpses into the detailed production work that goes on behind the scenes, you wouldn’t know just how vast Game of Thrones has become. SO stoked for Season 5!
