Everyone loves HBO Go, right? But for some shows like Game of Thrones, it just doesn’t feel right to try and contain the epic visuals and sound experience on a tiny device the size of your hand. Hell, I sometimes wish my 50 inch plasma was a bit bigger and my stereo system a bit crisper when I hear that theme music for the first time each spring.
What if we told you that you could watch Game of Thrones, not just in a theater but an IMAX theater? Would that change your perspective literally and figuratively? Of course it would. Well, HBO announced just this week that you’ll be able to do just that this year with a special screening of two episodes from Game of Thrones season 4 along with a sneak preview of season 5.
The episodes will be digitally remastered for IMAX screens and will be available in 150 theaters across the country. This will happen for one week: January 23-January 29th. Check out IMAX’ official site for location information but it looks like: if you have an IMAX theater in your area chances are you’ll get Game of Thrones this month.
Which episodes are we talking about? The last two episodes of season 4, the imfamous “episode 9” and then the season finale as well. HEre’s the episode synopses:
Episode nine, “The Watchers on the Wall,” takes place entirely at The Wall with the Night’s Watch hopelessly outnumbered as they attempt to defend Castle Black from the Wildings and features one the fiercest and most intense battle scenes ever filmed for television. Episode 10, the season finale entitled “The Children,” features Dany coming to grips with the realities of ruling a kingdom, Bran learning the startling reality of his destiny and Tyrion facing the truth of his unfortunate situation. Game ofThrones is an epic series whose storylines of treachery and nobility, family and honor, ambition and love, and death and survival, have captured the imagination of fans globally and made it one of the most popular shows on television.
Need more hype? Here’s a quote from a Senior VP at IMAX:
“We couldn’t think of a series more fitting than Game of Thrones to be the first presented in IMAX. The scope and production quality of the show is quite remarkable, which will be highlighted even further in select IMAX locations – allowing fans, as never before, to become a part of author George R. R. Martin’s world that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss created for HBO. It has the action, storyline and epic nature that our fans seek in IMAX and we’re thrilled to team with HBO and our longtime partners at Warner Brothers to offer audiences a chance to experience it in the ultimate theatre setting joined by other fans of the series.”
The new season, Game of Thrones 5 will air this Spring and we actually anticipate a new trailer of some sort dropping this weekend, January 11th. We’ll post that once we have it.
