Everyone hates the cable company. From the random fees for unknown services to the rate hikes that seem to happen every year– the cost of an HBO subscription has been much more than the $10-$20 price tag. For those, known as “cord-cutters” HBO has been literally impossible to obtain legally without a cable package of some kind forcing many to turn to piracy.
Today the future of television took one step forward as the rumblings of the past few months turned out to be true:
HBO will be available as a stand-alone, Netflix-like service in 2015!
HBO has been the profitable crown jewel in the portfolio of the mega-media conglomerate Time Warner, owner of CNN, TNT, TBS and HBO. The Home Box Office brings in 1.2 Billion in profits each year for TW. Speaking at the Time Warner Inc. Investor Meeting today, Richard Plepler, chairman and CEO of HBO broke the news noting that there were ten million broadband only homes and that number would continue to grow.
Plepler then added:
“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO.
“So, in 2015, we will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States. We will work with our current partners. And, we will explore models with new partners. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”
Want to watch HBO online? It was rather difficult before but it will get easier in 2015!
Time Warner has said they look to invest heavily in HBO next year. We expect a better app that will resist crashes, more original content than ever all with the HBO quality you’ve come to expect for the past four decades. HBO Watch, as fans, also expects HBO to expand the service even more internationally as time goes on so just because this is US only at first doesn’t mean it will be forever.
This is a huge day in HBO’s history. Will you subscribe to HBO as a stand alone service? How do you currently watch Game of Thrones online? Do you already subscribe to Netflix? The future is here and it’s on the Home Box Office. Join us in becoming a fan of the greatest television network of all time as it steps into the future.
