It should come as no surprise, due to its extra-long gestation period, that John Stewart’s state of the art animation project is not going forward. We reported back in November of 2015 about it for the first time knowing that the attempt to bring something different would take time but, in 05.10.16 we were still waiting. In the end, it looks like the powers behind the project just couldn’t figure it all out to get Stewart on air.

It should come as no surprise, due to its extra-long gestation period, that Jon Stewart’s state of the art animation project is not going forward. We reported back in November of 2015 about it for the first time knowing that the attempt to bring something different would take time but, in 05.10.16 we were still waiting. In the end, it looks like the powers behind the project just couldn’t figure it all out to get Stewart on air. This digital animated series has now been terminated citing technological logistics as the reason why.

The following statement has been issued:

“HBO and Jon Stewart have decided not to proceed with a short form digital animated project. We all thought the project had great potential, but there were technical issues in terms of production and distribution that proved too difficult given the quick turnaround and topical nature of the material. We’re excited to report that we have some future projects together which you will be hearing about in the near future.”

The technology involved creating an animated environment of a fake news network and then keying in Jon Stewart in real time. Isn’t that just the green screen technique? I don’t know. It was also explained that – churning out videos multiple times a day every day at a high creative level proved a challenge. That, coupled with logistical difficulties of distributing that content on the various HBO platforms in a timely fashion led to the decision not to go further.

The good news is that Stewart still has a development deal going with HBO and by the above statement we will know soon what Plan B is for the former The Daily Show host. Is Stewart still going to try to change it up with something different? We know his strength with social/political commentary but HBO already has Maher and Oliver for that. Maybe he can pop in with an HBO special kind of like what Andy Samberg is doing?

It is unfortunate that his first project didn’t come to fruition, so we still await what HBO can capture from Jon Stewart’s fertile mind. We’ll keep you posted.
