David Chase Talks THE SOPRANOS

Here are some brief comments from THE SOPRANOS creator David Chase that you might consider good news/bad news. You decide.Chase_onset

Mr. Chase told website Showbiz 411, in an interview mainly about his big screen debut as director of a movie called Not Fade Away, that a THE SOPRANOS movie is not going to happen. Roger Friedman’s piece for the site states –

[box]What about a “Sopranos” movie, I asked. “No, unh uh,” he said, shaking his head, and his wife even agreed. I did try to slip in–’those people are dead’–but Chase refuses to say what happened to Tony, Carmella, Meadow and AJ.[/box]

That is the bad news portion of this post. Fans of THE SOPRANOS will still have to live with the open ended “onion ring eating” finish to the series.

Mr. Chase did mention some potential good news for us and HBO. Here is how it was worded from the source –

[box]Though there are no plans for a feature film, Chase did mention that the idea of a prequel to the series has been thrown around at HBO recently.

“It would be with Tony’s father, and Uncle Junior, and Livia & Tony’s mother long before any of the other characters we know now.”[/box]

Did you catch that? There has been talk of a prequel. It would feature Tony’s parents and Uncle Junior and how they got “made.” Does that nDavid_Chaseotion intrigue anyone?

One other section from the piece sounded interesting. Again, quoting the site –

[box]But Chase has some other ideas. He has a series in mind with HBO about the silent film era. He also would like to make a psychological thriller.[/box]

Well, I say bring any of these projects to light Mr. Chase. We will surely welcome you back to HBO. Right?

BONUS: Here is a SNL film from this past weekend entitled “The Soprano Diaries.” So, glad this is not the prequel Chase had in mind.

I think even a prequel without the main characters from the series would make a ton of money!! Be interesting to see how they portray Uncle Junior and Johnny Boy Soprano being “made” and establishing the family. I’d pay to see it!!

You’d have to be pretty dense if you think there was ever a chance for a sopranos movie. Tony died at the end that was spelled out pretty clear. It really was a good ending.

There is a great website devoted to piecing it all togther for those that don’t quite get it… google master of sopranos.

I have watched the series at least three or four times through and even reading David Chase’s take on the finale I don’t think it is clear that Tony was killed. By reading Chase’s comments I think he wanted to leave the ending open for interpretation which I think he did a masterful job of. It’s been seven years and we are still talking about it!!

The fact you’re all still talking about the ending is testament to Chase’s brilliant writing – it lives on, long after it was aired, precisely because he didn’t give us a tidy resolution. Genius.

Chase and crew KNOW they botched the ending of an amazing show. Now that Gandolfini is dead RIP and there cant be a movie only know are they saying that Tony died and they set up the POV on purpose. Brutal ending to an amazing show.

Depends on the actors, always… They make or break a series; well, the continuation of a plot that makes sense, gets out attention, surprises and keeps us guessing – then, I agree, I would look forward to a prequel — kinda like Godfather 2.

Easy — continue with AJ. . . now years later and maybe a bit psycho. Sopranos of old had ghosts revisiting. . . Junior, Pussy, Chris — unlimited potential for AJ. Maybe AJ’s blackouts have his dad visit him.

What a load of crap.Tony didn’t die. He knew what wqas going on in that diner and was not the least bit worried or concerned. They finished their meal and left. That is what a continuation would have showed. Not long after the series ended, The character who played Tony said (not an exact quote) that a full length movie was still a possiblity. That apparently has changed now but, that statement alone tells me that “Tony” is alive and well.

Let’s see what happened at the end of the series if Tony dies or not the ending sucked ass!!! Why don’t you finish that first and make it better, pick up where you last left off Chase. God took a great series and made it horrible just for the last 30 seconds WOW man really worth it!!!!

My favorite show of all time, I’ve watched all seasons over and over again. I’da loved for it to continue or for a movie but realistically the way chase ended it all points to that tony was killed. From all the hints in the season leading to that final episode to the way that final episode was shot with the pov’s, it’s obvious how chase ended it. As disappointed as I’ve been that its over, he did do a good job as opposed to other cheesy endings like that of entourage’s. A prequel just wouldn’t be the same with out the characters from the original, just their personalities n characteristics can’t be matched from the way they talked, the jokes they made, their ruthlessness. This show definitely has to be the best series of all time.

This was the best ending ever.
As he waited in the coffee shop for his family to arrive , he looked up every time the door opened up as there was a bell on the door, then the point of view was of Tonys as he looked at who was walking in. One time it was Carmel, another it was AJ, and while waiting for Meadow, he looked up every time the door opened and then Chase cut to Tonys to see who was walking in.
Chase only did this about a dozen times in 3 minutes.
Then the guy at the counter walks to the bathroom , Meadow finally parks the car, walks in, the bell rings, Tony looks up, and then, cut to his point of view, sudden black and silent….he was gone. Awesome and chilling.
We don’t need to see his brains splattered on Carmella, we wouldn’t, because it was fromTonys point of view.
I thought this was totally original , whenever have we seen in any movie the main character be killed from That characters point of view…every other movie we are a witness to what was happening….Chase put us in Tonys seat…
It was over

Chase destroyed the series finale, and killing most of the major characters ensured no continuation of it. Prequels never are as good as the original series, for the most part, not interested. Take care….. Peace To All

All this is soooo fucked up… Ruined a classic mobster series with this bullshit ending… I say make a fuckin movie, or sleep with the fishes. I will never take Chase’s future developments seriously or even consider viewing it unless he cleans up this Soprano mess…

I’m watching it on HBO right now. Tony just was shot durin juniors failed attempt at “making a move!” I would still love a movie even if its about the early days Tony would always reminisce…

From a writers pov. It was a great ending. I’d love a movie or continuation sequel, however, chase ended all the characters. Chris is dead, silvio’s character to was ended with the coma he won’t wake up from, pauile was given capo of the cursed Aprile crew giving the hint that he’s gonna be dead as-well..and obviously tony is dead. Great ending, just hard for all us sopranos lovers to except its all over. They already had tony survive 1 gun shot, to have him survive the holstens scene would just ruin the series we all love. I do love the idea of Tony’s father and junior , having a series with them.. Seeing hesh pauile all them in the beginning would be great. But nothing, no show, EVER. Will top the sopranos. Shame it had to end

Everyone was disappointed in the ending.. need a movie to satisfy all the fans who waited around for 2 years between seasons – now do it for us.

Chase put all the clues there. Anyone who wants to know what happened to Tony only needs to read any one of the many online analysis on the last episode. Tony is as dead as a door nail. No question. Picking up on what happened afterwards like today would be the best bet for a new series.

People refer to the time when The Wire, The Sporanos and Sex and the City were all on the air as “HBOs Golden Age”. Not that I agree but I would like to see something as big and culturally relevant as The Sopranos come back to HBO. Boardwalk is awesome dont get me wrong. But I dont think its as ubiquitous as The Sopranos.
