DavidChase-300x168Though this story broke a bit ago HBOWatch would be remiss not to mention that David Chase, the creator of one of HBO’s most beloved series THE SOPRANOS has finally given thought to that series’ final scene. It has been a hot topic of debate ever since 06.10.2007 when the series faded to black. David Shore was at a sit-down with the Directors Guild of America when the subject came up and was printed in that organization’s quarterly magazine. He now are the words of David Chase.

“I thought the ending would be somewhat jarring, sure. But not to the extent it was, and not a subject of such discussion. I really had no idea about that. I never considered the black a shot. I just thought what we see is black. The ceiling I was going for at that point, the biggest feeling I was going for, honestly, was don’t stop believing. It was very simple and much more on the nose than people think. That’s what I wanted people to believe. That life ends and death comes, but don’t stop believing. There are attachments we make in life, even though it’s all going to come to an end, that are worth so much, and we’re so lucky to have been able to experience them. Life is short. Either it ends here for Tony or some other time. But in spite of that, it’s really worth it. So don’t stop believing.”

— Did you catch that? He never considered the quick blackout as a beat of storyline for the scene. What he is saying is that after there is no more footage to show you “fade to black”. Maybe, to keep up with the moment he chose the quick cut, but it didn’t mean anything according to him. Many read into that the impression that that abrupt end was a part of the scene and meant something.

“That last shot of Tony ends on ‘don’t stop,’ it’s mid-song. I’m not going to go into [if that’s Tony’s POV],” says Chase. “I thought the possibility would go through a lot of people’s minds or maybe everybody’s mind that he was killed. … Whether this is the end here, or not, it’s going to come at some point for the rest of us. … All I know is the end is coming for all of us.”

If you want to see David Chase’s breakdown of the scene almost shot for shot then hit the link for the DGA site. It proves what this writer has said all along – whether or not Tony died in that diner or not is left to the viewer to decide. Some say that there were plenty of clues leading up to the episode that says that the was whacked and others hold out that he survived that day, but that he always needed to look over his shoulder. Whichever way you feel about just – Don’t Stop Believing.

For God’s sake, just say whether or not he died already. I love Chase for bringing us Tony Soprano and all, but stop trying to be so cryptic and role playing Plato and just tell the fans if his “creator” killed him or if he had intentions of someday making a full length feature film. That was always my take. He did not want to close that door to a possible 1/2 billion $ movie and for good reason. If Sex and the City did well, just imagine the barrier “The Sopranos” movie would’ve done. That’s the real reason (IMO) why we got a fade to black. It had nothing to do with a philosophical/subliminal message from Chase.
