000eb76wThe fifth book in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series is available tonight as of now at retailers around the world.  The book is recieving almost universal critical acclaim and has seen a huge books in sales compared to the fourth book,  A Feast for Crows.  Here are what just some of the world’s largest media outlets are saying about Dance with Dragons, another tome HBO will use as source material for it’s Emmy Nominated series, Game of Thrones:

Washington Post  – “Filled with vividly rendered set pieces, unexpected turnings, assorted cliffhangers and moments of appalling cruelty, “A Dance With Dragons” is epic fantasy as it should be written: passionate, compelling, convincingly detailed and thoroughly imagined. Despite a number of overtly fantastic elements (dragons, seers, shape shifters and sorcerers), the book — and the series as a whole — feels grounded in the brutal reality of medieval times and has more in common with the Wars of the Roses than it does with “The Lord of the Rings.” The result is a complex summer blockbuster with brains and heart, a book with rare — and potentially enormous — appeal.”

The Wall Street Journal – “The great attraction of the story must lie in its panorama of a medieval kingdom: knights in armor, mercenary “sellswords,” tavern wenches, struggling and striving inhabitants in all forms, from low to high. Almost everyone is out for himself, without any greater cause to serve. The most useful quality is cruelty. Flay your enemies or put them in cylindrical oubliettes, where the prisoner is made to stand at all times, unable to sit, crouch or even scratch an ankle. Loyalty? Gratitude? Rare qualities, especially among the aristocracy. The interconnections within a fully realized world give the saga its engaging sense of wheels-within-wheels.”

The Los Angeles Times – “Having overcome the writerly challenges of a series grown longer than expected — and having survived the well-documented hostility of those readers who have displayed a grotesque sense of entitlement over publication delays — Martin seems poised in the last two books to bring home one of the best series in the history of fantasy.”

My SanAntonio“No ode to a romantic age, this is sinewy storytelling, with precisely etched characters feeling valid emotions and reacting to them and each other in unpredictable ways. It’s a game played for keeps. Can’t wait for the next one.”

Salon-The result is foreboding. I couldn’t stop reading Martin because my desire to know what was going to happen combined with my absolute inability to guess what would happen and left me helpless before his sorcery. At the end, I felt shaken and exhausted.  I can’t recall the last time a work of science fiction or fantasy had that kind of effect on me. I’m almost glad that it will be years before I have to do this all over again. Because it will take me years to recover.

The HBO Watch staff are still on A Storm of Swords!  We’d like to congratulate George on the fantastic work as always, it was worth the wait!   How long will it take you to complete this one?  Share your excitement in the comments below!
