Togetherness: “For the Kids”

Togetherness: “For the Kids”

This is it.  The very last episode of Togetherness.  I’m not entirely sure what precipitated the swift end to such an amazing show, but I’m a little bit fraught.  It is nice to know that the Duplass brothers will continue their creative relationship with HBO because if they can create this, then I know they’ve got some good ideas.  But for now, let’s bid adieu correctly. Tina’s (Amanda Peet) brief male encounter from last week and Alex’s surprise announcement doesn’t deter Tina from getting her lady bits checked out to make sure a bun can cook properly.  For the moment, her choice of sperm...

TOGETHERNESS: “The Sand Situation”

TOGETHERNESS: “The Sand Situation”

Let me lead this review off by stating that the fact that this series now ends in one more episode opened up a lot of questions of whether it was going to end on the right note. We won’t know that for another week yet. We certainly needed a high & positive moment though, and we got it, but it all went abruptly as it came. That type of back & forth is what makes this shows so real. That is what makes it a treat to watch and that is what makes it a disappointment that it soon ends. But first let’s look at this seventh episode starting with the Inside the Episode clip. The episode had a few strong moments in it. You know, Michelle...

Togetherness: “Geri-ina”

Togetherness: “Geri-ina”

There are two things in this episode that I have personally experienced. First, when a woman you hardly know wants to be your friend and is playing off like she wants to be your best friend forever, you know, oozing syrupy sweet enthusiasm – CAUTION – it’s not going to end well. This is a scenario in which Michelle finds herself in.  Second, as a woman over 35 who would like to have children, it’s a tough choice to make because you are bombarded with a LOT of overwhelming information. If you’re single, you have to think about going to get your health checked out, then onto a fertility doctor to see if everything checks...

HBO’s TOGETHERNESS Cancelled After Two Seasons!

HBO’s TOGETHERNESS Cancelled After Two Seasons!

Our mouths just dropped open in surprise. HBO’s TOGETHERNESS will end its run with the eighth episode of the current season which debuts Sunday, April 10. And HBO, who doesn’t seem to care much about ratings apparently is citing numbers as the reason for the cancellation. The series premiere, on 01.11.15 started off at 427,000 viewers that ballooned up to 2.6 million across the platforms but Season Two, which debuted on 02.21.16, has only seen 330,000 viewers. However, the critics loved it; Rotten Tomatoes for one. Of course, the numbers don’t lie – if not enough people were not watching it then it has to...

Togetherness: “Just the Range”

Togetherness: “Just the Range”

With half the season over, (find Episode 4 here) this episode proved to be a turning point for the season and for the characters. It’s a matter of self discovery for all. Alex discovers a kindred spirit. Tina discovers what she really wants in life. Michelle discovers how to be courageous. And Brett…well, he discovers what it is like to have a catfight in the backseat while you’re driving. Alex is working on the movie set in which the original image provided to him is being constantly changed.  From typical Dracula style vampire, he then becomes a vampire who is also a pimp.  Which, never really got explained, but we did...

TOGETHERNESS: “Changetown”

TOGETHERNESS: “Changetown”

So Ernie and Bert, err, I mean Alex and Brett, have been mulling over some potential television/movie ideas. On the opposite end of town, we see Michelle fussing over the kids while Tina comes to watch over for the day. (Tina started being motherly last episode – Oh boy.) Changes are coming for all of our beloved characters. Change is really the only thing that is consistent in everyone’s lives. How you choose to deal with it is another matter entirely. So the kids (at least Sophie) are onto the fact that something isn’t right between mom and dad. Understatement!! Brett seems calm and in control and Michelle is very nervous. Can...

TOGETHERNESS: “Advanced Pretend”

TOGETHERNESS: “Advanced Pretend”

With only eight episodes a season for TOGETHERNESS the inevitable had to drop pretty quickly and it did. At the end of last week’s episode (“Everybody Is Grownups”) Michelle dropped the bomb to Brett that “she slept with David.” Now, in this current episode we learn how Brett handles the news and how he doesn’t really address it; Alex is with him every step of the way. In fact, both parties are with their respective support staff as Tina is with Michelle. If you recall Tina wrecked her car and so spent the night. I liked this episode, but was also a bit put off by it as well. Basically, Brett bolted out of the house and ran until...

TOGETHERNESS: “Everybody is Grownups”

TOGETHERNESS: “Everybody is Grownups”

So far this season, we’ve seen Brett (Mark Duplass) invigorated in his new attitude and zest for life as a father and a husband.  Michelle (Melanie Lynskey) is still dealing with the fallout from her affair and trying to figure out her relationship with Brett.  Alex (Steve Zissis) is embracing his new celebrity and new girlfriend Christy (Ginger Gonzaga,) meanwhile Tina (Amanda Peet) is trying to wrap her brain around breaking Alex’s heart and how to fix it.  Awkwardness ensues. In “Everybody is Grownups,” Brett and Michelle prepare a party for Alex’s homecoming from filming in New Orleans. Brett’s...
