Latest News for HBO's The Leftovers

The Leftovers, from the man who brought you LOST comes an HBO series unlike any other. In a small town a group of individuals are trying to put their lives back together after what's thought to be a rapture event takes a swath of the world's population. This is the story of how the "leftovers" handle themselves in the aftermath. Starring Liv Tyler and Justin Theroux the show has some star power behind it as well. Premiering on HBO in the summertime we expect great things from this series and look forward to digging into the mystery.

The Leftovers: “Certified”

The Leftovers: “Certified”

Continuing to delve deeper into the human psyche, this week’s episode of The Leftovers display pain and trauma. The Sudden Departure did many things to many people: but most notably, we get an episode dedicated to Laurie Garvey and the pain she was forced to endure when the Departure took place. We get some insight into why she is the way she is. And it’s pretty sad. This episode sees Laurie, Matt, John, Michael, Nora, Garvey Sr. and Grace all gathering around a table to have a meal together. To the naked eye, it’s just a group of folks having a bite to eat, talking and spending time together. However, we know that this is no ordinary...

The Leftovers: “It’s a Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt World”

The Leftovers: “It’s a Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt World”

Artistic creativity is something to be expected of The Leftovers, including its metaphorically heavy song choice for the opening credits. This week’s episode treated us to a feverish French prayer, likely the prayer being uttered by the man who set off the nuke later in the episode’s opening. (Here’s a link for those interested in the translation of the French prayer in the opening credits, alluding to the departure and apocalyptic extinction.) All of the openings segments on The Leftovers thus far have been open to interpretation and are highly telling of what is to come. This episode’s opening tells a tale of a man who believed...

The Leftovers: “G’Day Melbourne”

The Leftovers: “G’Day Melbourne”

A tale of two “Kevins.” A trip to Australia leads to more confusion, heartache and bewilderment. A relationship on the skids. I don’t know about you, but watching Kevin and Nora’s relationship begin to unravel was unnerving (was it starting to unravel or did it just come undone with lightening speed?). We see the mysterious return of someone who was previously thought to be dead. Is Kevin completely losing his mind? What’s with the television in the hotel room? And the television flickering off while Kevin is staring at a woman who appears to be Evie – creepy or what?! No, we need to play that out. Here. The further we get into...

The Leftovers: “Crazy Whitefella Thinking”

The Leftovers: “Crazy Whitefella Thinking”

The Leftovers has built up phenomenally from its start, as we’ve come to connect with its array of duplicitous and damaged characters. As watchers of the series, we’ve come to expect character-centered episodes—a major factor in how The Leftovers has excelled in character development for three seasons. This week, we focus on Kevin Sr. in Australia, picking up on the timeline left off in last week’s episode. There is no doubt The Leftovers is expanding its lore right now, and with the direction the series has taken, who can argue with that? However, I feel as though “Crazy Whitefella Thinking” may have been the weakest episode of...

The Leftovers: “Don’t Be Ridiculous”

The Leftovers: “Don’t Be Ridiculous”

To say that this episode of The Leftovers was bizarre, as if something out of a feverish dream, is an understatement. In a very Nora-centric episode, we see her dealing with feelings of isolation, depression and finally anger, not to mention drifting in and out of some sort of parallel world. Is she going crazy? What the hell has really happened to all the people that suddenly departed? And what’s up with the return of a ’80s sitcom character, Mark Linn-Baker (remember Perfect Strangers?)?!  Oh, right, his castmates departed! Viewers will feel as though they took a plunge through the same rabbit hole that Alice did when she took...

There Are Plenty of Stories Left in THE LEFTOVERS

There Are Plenty of Stories Left in THE LEFTOVERS

I don’t know about you, but I thought perhaps THE LEFTOVERS could have lasted longer than three seasons. Here we are in the midst of the third and final episodes and I’m disappointed in seeing it end so soon. Though I do not know what all will be revealed in the final 8 hours of this series I found myself pondering what else could have been explored. Below are a few thoughts of possible plotlines the series could have examined in an additional season or two before where we are now. What I am not suggesting, because it was a clear principle of the series, is a thorough description of the Sudden Departure that inexplicably decreased the...

The Leftovers Season Three Premiere: “The Book of Kevin”

The Leftovers Season Three Premiere: “The Book of Kevin”

Before dissecting the incredibly dense and heavily metaphorical season opener of The Leftovers, it only seems right to start with my brief yet longing love letter to the series. There is truly nothing on television even close in similarity to The Leftovers. This series has done more in 21 episodes than arguably any other series currently on television. That is, of course, largely due to the show’s incredible source material for Season One and a massive jump in intellectual creativity and intensity in Season Two.  This season presents its third and final chapter of the tale in a highly allegorical manner, in classic fashion for the...

HBO’s Spring 2017 Lineup Locked In

HBO’s Spring 2017 Lineup Locked In

As is the norm at HBO every drama hour is coupled with a set of comedy half-hours to make a Sunday night a complete package. 2017 is a slightly different schedule than the past few years have been; that is mainly because of GAME OF THRONES’ move and the arrival of limited series like THE YOUNG POPE and BIG LITTLE LIES. Here is our opportunity to see which shows are filling the calendar next. The comedy duo did not break up this time around. SILICON VALLEY and VEEP are still back to back. The dramatic hour is reserved for the final season of THE LEFTOVERS. HBO very simply states: SILICON VALLEY – HBO has confirmed an April debut for...
