October 14: “Sudden Departure” Anniversary

October 14: “Sudden Departure” Anniversary

The catalyst for the Tom Perrotta novel “The Leftovers” and its HBO adaptation, of the same name, by Damon Lindelof and Perrotta was the singular and mysteriously devastating incident known as the Sudden Departure. It was a tragic event still yet to be explained or understood. It occurred in the blink of an eye on October 14, 2011. 2% of the world’s population just vanish and what is left over is a distraught, perplexed populace left to sort out and make some sense of why such a massive loss happened in such an extraordinary way. The family and friends missing did not all suddenly leave us in the usual fashion – there were no deaths...

The Leftovers: HBO’s Forgotten Show

The nominations for the 2016 and 68th Primetime Emmy Awards® are out, and once again HBO boasts a mightily impressive number of nominations with 94, more than any other network. As anticipated, the nominations list includes HBO favorites and award winning shows such as Game of Thrones, Veep and Silicon Valley. Whilst HBO’s dominance is a cause for celebration, there are some notable omissions from the nominations list. Every year there are numerous shows that are deemed to be overlooked, and this year is no different, with shows such as HBO’s own popular and rejuvenated show Girls missing the cut. Yet it is the...

The Leftovers: “I Live Here Now”

The Leftovers: “I Live Here Now”

The Leftovers second and possibly final season was an emotional experience. They tread into all forms of loss, and all forms of blame. You see people lash out in anger, and sadness often times leading to violence. However the true meaning of this season, and in essence the true meaning of the show is delightfully simple “Family”. The bonds that hold us together, whether by blood, or love. They can strain, and twist until they almost reach the breaking point. But in the end like an elastic they have a tendency to snap back to you in the most unexpected ways.   “The Truth” The episode opens with a Flashback (as does the previous...

THE LEFTOVERS: “Ten Thirteen”

THE LEFTOVERS: “Ten Thirteen”

Okay, like last week’s episode, this writer was a bit bewildered and confused. I admit I had to watch it again, to make sure I understood the events that took place and catch the subtext.   “Ten Thirteen” was a slow burn with small moments of intensity and a little stilted with long musical tracks, even though the songs used were great subtext for the scenes; it was great though, to get a story from Meg’s perspective. There was also a definite chronological journey from the past to the present. Even before the Sudden Departure you could see the downward spiral Meg was in.  She started off as a coke head, who was anxiously having...

THE LEFTOVERS: “International Assassin”

THE LEFTOVERS: “International Assassin”

…     … I sat in silence after this episode ended …    …   …    … and I stared at a blank page for a long time before I assembled a thought or two to write about this eighth episode in the second season of THE LEFTOVERS. …     …    I’m still conflicted, so head over to the review of the previous episode if you need to then come back. I don’t know whether I like this episode or not. How about any of you? There is a lot of cool moments in this episode and subtle twists that add up to an interesting hour. We left the scene with Michael Murphy dragging a seemingly dead Kevin Garvey out of Virgil’s...
