Movie Review: Divergent

Movie Review: Divergent

I’m a huge fan of dystopian literature, especially young adult novels. Having enjoyed the books, I was thrilled to hear Divergent was being adapted.   Based in a post-apocalyptic Chicago, the society remaining has created a faction system.  When parents have children, they are raised in their parents’ faction until they turn 16 at which point they take an aptitude test to determine in which faction they truly belong.  The factions are Abnegation (the selfless), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), and Dauntless (the brave).  If you cannot pick a faction or fail out of your choice, you become...

Movie Review: 47 Ronin

Movie Review: 47 Ronin

The true story of the 47 Ronin is that of the samurai of the same number in the early 1700s who avenged their lord after he was compelled to commit Seppoku (suicide where in one stabs themselves in the stomach) and in turn did the same as the Japanese honor code, Bushido, dictates. 47 Ronin, the movie, is weird. In good ways and bad. Thankfully, the good is genuinely good and the bad is fascinatingly bad, so much so that it’s worth a recommendation just to see what happens when so much goes wrong in a movie ala Green Lantern or The Lone Ranger. Feudal Japan. Everyone cares about their honor and their customs. No one questions falling...

Movie Review: Grudge Match

Movie Review: Grudge Match

There’s a weird soullessness to taking nostalgia-driven properties and repackaging them as cheap, easily consumed products. Take Grudge Match, a movie ostensibly about two retired boxers who left the ring on shaky ground with each other brought back for a cash-in on what’s left of their feud, but actually stars Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro. Rocky and Raging Bull. It’s Rocky and Raging Bull people. Alien vs. Predator but with old guys. The movie has this self-aware cynicism throughout, like the people who made it understood it was a cheap cash-in from the start. Sylvester Stallone plays Henry “Razor”...

Movie Review: Escape Plan

Movie Review: Escape Plan

Escape Plan is a movie that promises both action and intrigue. Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone) is the leading expert in breaking out of prisons. He works for an independent company who promises to find flaws in high-security prisons in order to allow the prison’s management to try to make their facility as escape-proof as possible. Ray agrees to test a prison intended for the most undesirable prisoners in the world. The prison itself is in a location unknown to him or his colleagues. Once inside, he learns that he is set up and the people that put him there do not intend for him to escape. Not only that, but any safety net options he had...

Movie Review: That Awkward Moment

Movie Review: That Awkward Moment

What I most came away from this movie with was that this film was a guy’s film trying to pass itself off as a girl’s film. Not saying movies are necessarily gender oriented, but you can tell at times what demographic a movie is trying to aim towards. Watch the trailer and see what you think…   So from what I see, it could be a cute movie about guys learning about love and relationships.  And it kind of is, but after watching it I would say it is not quite as advertised. The film focuses on three friends: Jason, Daniel, and Mikey. Played by Zac Efron, Miles Teller, and Michael B. Jordon respectively, these are guys...

Movie Review: The Lego Movie

Movie Review: The Lego Movie

Never before has a films title song been so descriptive, that its name alone is essentially a review of the film. “Everything Is Awesome” is heard blasting throughout a multitude of scenes in this spectacular Lego based Comedy. Upon initial view, this film could easily be dismissed as being merely an “advertisement for Lego” but anyone stuck in that thought process is wrong on every level. The film is not only hilarious, but it also has interesting messages about finding your inner child. It has strong elements of satire with the amazing send-up of “The Heroes Journey” trope, and yet it still manages to tug on your heartstrings...

Movie Review: The Legend of Hercules

Movie Review: The Legend of Hercules

2014 has been a great year for movies about Ancient Greece. “300: Rise of an Empire” sailed into theatres this past spring, and we saw not one but two Hercules-inspired movies. We can even throw “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” into the pile as it’s based on Greek myths with a modern twist. While we have historical proof in the writings of Herodotus to back up much of 2006’s “300” and its sequel “300: Rise of an Empire,” we must look to mythology for legends regarding Hercules and his Greek counterpart, Heracles. For well over half my life, I have studied mythology and spent...

Movie Review: Winter’s Tale

Movie Review: Winter’s Tale

I watched this movie while flying down to the Dominican Republic. It was entertaining, if you enjoy historical love stories mixed with a little bit of the supernatural. It stars Colin Farrell (HBO’s True Detective), Jessica Finlay Brown (Downton Abbey), Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connolly and Will Smith. A young immigrant couple’s dreams are dashed forever when they are refused entry into the United States. They are marked with the symbol that means consumption. They know that the only chance their baby son will have to live a good life would be in America and not back home. They place the baby in a tiny little model sailboat, with the...
