Latest News for HBO's John Oliver: Last Week Tonight

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver follows in the footsteps of John Stewart and Stephen Colbert with a satirical look at the weeks news. If a major event happens during the week they'll cover it... on Sunday night at 11! John took over for Stewart on the Daily Show for a summer in 2013 and HBO liked what they saw apparently because they offered him his own show shortly after that event. Mr. Oliver joins Bill Maher on HBO bringing news-comedy to your living room with that Home Box Office touch.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: a Look Back at 2015

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: a Look Back at 2015

I’ve been a fan of John Oliver since his days at The Bugle podcast, in which he discussed political topics with partner Andy Zaltzman. I am also a Late Night and political junkie. This year has seen seismic changes in the Late Night landscape: Stephen Colbert replaced David Letterman, James Corden replaced Craig Ferguson, Trevor Noah replaced Jon Stewart, and Oliver’s former colleague Larry Wilmore debuted his own show. Amidst all this change, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver saw increased viewership and influence during its second season, which aired through February to November of 2015. It became a social media phenomenon,...

HBO’s John Oliver Announces Tour

HBO’s John Oliver Announces Tour

Straight from John Oliver’s website we learn that on his hiatus from LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER we will be going on a 15-stop stand-up tour. As of this posting LAST WEEK TONIGHT has aired fifteen of its twenty-four episode run. That means the show’s Season One will end in mid-October and that gives him enough time to squeeze in a few dates around the country before the end of the year. John Oliver is no stranger to the stand-up gig as that was what he was doing in the UK before moving to the States in 2006. Of course, we know that he had a healthy stint on The Daily Show and a few Comedy Central specials under his belt before...

Stephen Hawking to Appear on John Oliver

Stephen Hawking to Appear on John Oliver

John Oliver has been in the driver’s seat of his new HBO show for almost two months now and all signs point to a successful launch of Last Week Tonight. Ratings have held steady around one million viewers each week, which is about right for his 11PM time slot on HBO’s air. This week though, fans of the sciences will appreciate Sunday’s guest: cosmologist, author and revered scientist Stephen Hawking will be on the program! No word on what he’ll be doing, whether it’s a skit, gag or an actual interview but we’re hoping for a bit of substance from the visit at some point. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver...

John Oliver and Net Neutrality

John Oliver and Net Neutrality

You know, I was going to wind down talking about LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER because he has twenty-four installment in his premiere season and it was going to be too difficult to generate something every week. The intent was just to give you a heads up about the series for the first few episodes until those interested caught on. Well now I can’t let this week go by without addressing the whole net neutrality issue that came up. I’m sure you’ve seen it by now. First off, as he has already done once or twice, he dared his audience, in the episode of 06.01, to get involved in the issue of the night – net neutrality. Here is...

LAST WEEK TONIGHT Still Covering News on Its Week Off

LAST WEEK TONIGHT Still Covering News on Its Week Off

As we know John Oliver and crew had the Memorial Day 2014 weekend off, but as this web exclusive proves just because there was no show doesn’t mean there was no news. So Mr. Oliver does the best he can to predict just what the news might have been. Check it out and don’t forget to laugh. You should find something to laugh at surely. It is not a full blown show as it is under five minutes long and it is not slicked up with the graphics and clips but it might tide you over until next Sunday rolls...

The Comedy Duo of John Oliver and Fareed Zakaria on LAST WEEK TONIGHT!

The Comedy Duo of John Oliver and Fareed Zakaria on LAST WEEK TONIGHT!

Since there is no new edition of LAST WEEK TONIGHT this Memorial Day weekend I decided to take John Oliver up on his offer from his last show to check out the Web exclusive he was presenting with Fareed Zakaria. Then I thought why watch it alone so I will share that interview with you a bit lower in the post. Now I know you don’t give a rat’s ass about the elections in India and you may not even care who the hell Mr. Zakaria is, but John and Fareed make a pretty funny pair here. For those who don’t know who he is Mr. Z. is an expert on foreign policy and international affairs and not only appears on CNN but is a producer and consultant...

LAST WEEK TONIGHT Episode 3 – Old White Dicks & Climate Change Deniers

LAST WEEK TONIGHT Episode 3 – Old White Dicks & Climate Change Deniers

I wasn’t sure I was going to do this every week, but here I am with another LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JON OLIVER piece. The only reason I am posting this really is because of the comments I made in last week’s post. I had noted the censored images that appeared in the telecast and they were not just blurred imagery but black barred ones. My thought was like “Hey, doesn’t John Oliver realize yet that he is on HBO? Well lucky for us and Mr. Oliver in Episode Three, which debuted on 05.12, he did acknowledge and use to his advantage the fact that he was indeed on HBO. Did you see this? He was in the midst of talking about an election...

A LAST WEEK TONIGHT Web Exclusive Interview

A LAST WEEK TONIGHT Web Exclusive Interview

Hey, I thought John Oliver was supposed to do a weekly interview on LAST WEEK TONIGHT? Now I am not going to grumble too hard here but two installments in and the show has tweaked its format. If you recall the show that debuted on 05.04 we had a discussion about the military actions in Ukraine; a “May the Fourth Be With You” clip; the White House Correspondent’s Dinner in D. C.; the Shah of Brunei, the botched execution that launched into a huge Death Penalty piece and a couple of other fun clips thrown in. The show ran out of time with that corporeal punishment discourse that an interview never made into the half hour. I just...
