Girls: “American Bitch”

Girls: “American Bitch”

Girls is doing one thing right this season, and that’s showcasing every character for who they really are, or rather, who they have come to be. “American Bitch” centers exclusively around Hannah and Chuck Palmer, with a dreamy and outlandish atmosphere akin to “One Man’s Trash,” the fifth episode of season two which Hannah spends with Patrick Wilson. “American Bitch,” however, is much more biting and sour. There is an anxious tension and passive aggression consistent through Hannah and Chuck’s conversations as the episode goes on, and though their ethical journey seems to end on a (mostly) agreeable note, it is clear...

Girls: “Hostage Situation”

Girls: “Hostage Situation”

The final season of Girls is underway and in the second episode of the season, things go a little crazy. But after five seasons of these characters, crazy is all we know. So without crazy it wouldn’t be the show we’ve come to know and love. As previously mentioned, this show wouldn’t be itself if it weren’t for our favorite characters acting in insane ways.  As last season ended and this season began, I had hope for Marnie. Sure, she and Ray called each other ‘babe’ or ‘baby’ a lot, but I had hope that maybe Marnie was on a good path and finding her center and being less of a selfish human...

Girls Season Six Premiere: “All I Ever Wanted”

Girls Season Six Premiere: “All I Ever Wanted”

Season Six of Girls is finally here and the first episode takes off from where Season Five leaves off. “Takes off” is a strong phrase for how the episode actually went. It was more like a slow Sunday drive down some unremarkable road, except with more swearing and the occasional mention of reproductive organs and awkward sex. Let’s recap first: Now, “All I Ever Wanted” opens up with Hannah typing up a printed version monolog she presented at the end of the Season Five finale. Out of sheer curiosity, I read it and I’m confused to how not only it got published, but how it landed her a writing assignment that she will...

GIRLS Season Six Promo Drops: “Group Meeting”

GIRLS Season Six Promo Drops: “Group Meeting”

Okay GIRLS fans, some more cool stuff has been released and with only weeks until the final season premiere, these chicks are doing all they can to keep us chomping at the bit. In the official season 6 promo, we see all four girls gathered in a bathroom which, let’s face it, is the ultimate place for women to gather and discuss important matters. It looks to me like the season is going to much less focused on love and more focused on the relationships of the girls with each other. The word ‘girls’ in its very nature suggest an immaturity and a naivety but as these girls grow up into women, they have knowingly grown further...

Five Observations from the GIRLS Season Six Teaser

Five Observations from the GIRLS Season Six Teaser

As we all know, the final season of Girls is coming to HBO early next year, but to whet your appetites until then, a teaser trailer has been released. In only 41 seconds I have about 6000 questions, but for the purposes of keeping this brief, let’s just focus on 5 key moments in this teaser that indicate season 6 to be the best yet. Marnie & Desi My first question, is why does Marnie look like a 1950’s femme fatale in her head scarf, glasses and sports car? My second question is, why is Desi driving? My third question is, where the heck is Ray? So at the end of last season, Marnie and Ray decide to officially give things a go which...

Lena Dunham’s Goodbye to “Girls”

Lena Dunham’s Goodbye to “Girls”

We’ve known this day was coming for a while now but that doesn’t make it any less emotional! Dunham announced at the beginning of the year that the sixth season of the hit show would be it’s last. She said that Hannah belongs in her twenties and as she approaches and enters her thirties she felt that the chapter had closed and said in an interview that she “feel(s) ready to turn my heart and soul and insides over to something else. It felt right to be turning 30 and moving into this decade with a clean slate.” Jenni Konner, long time friend and collaborator of Dunham’s who also directed the season five finale, has...

‘Girls’ Actor Peter Scolari Nabs An Emmy

‘Girls’ Actor Peter Scolari Nabs An Emmy

Yay, Peter Scolari snagged an Emmy (last week at the Creative Emmys) for his guest work on Girls, but he wasn’t supposed to have gotten it. Peter MacNicol was nominated for his role on VEEP. He was disqualified, however because his role fell out of the boundaries of a guest appearance as he was in over 50% of the season. Oops, that slipped Scolari into contention and looked what happened. Known best on HBO as Hannah Horvath’s ostentatious father Tad,  Peter Scolari has been nominated several times before but finally scored his first win. Tad’s character arc on the show has been, in my opinion, one of the more rewarding...
