The Young Pope: “Episode Four”

The Young Pope: “Episode Four”

This show continues to run on Ambien. After another dreamlike sequence, it’s revealed that Tonino Pettola, a man with stigmata, actually exists and has been writing to the Vatican asking for an audience with the pope. Naturally, Lenny has been sending the mail back to him unopened, and is unmoved even after an emotional plea on television. He’s slouched on a sofa with a cigarette clinging to his lip like he’s bored out of his mind. I’m not sure why Tonino is even there, unless it’s to double down on Lenny not being into the cheesier parts of the church. A lot of stigmata have been shown to be self-inflicted, and when I ask...

The Young Pope: “Episode Three”

The Young Pope: “Episode Three”

I can’t help but remember where the last episode left us—Lenny the Pope (Jude Law) was joking that he believed in God. Or was he? He prayed hard to become pope—really hard. So hard that he may want to invest in some papal Depends. He is intense. He’s an arrogant jerk one minute, and on his knees shouting to God in prayer the next. He cordially invites you to his office for a friendly visit, then tells you to pick some desolate place to spend the rest of your career, and does it all in the same level tone as though he is picking out new curtains for a random vestibule. He can be abrasive and compassionate at the exact same time. And...

Boardwalk Empire Series Finale: Eldorado

Boardwalk Empire Series Finale: Eldorado

Boardwalk Empire is over, but there remains the unfinished business of the winners and losers. If you haven’t watched the finale yet, beware of spoilers! The final episode mostly tied up loose threads, but there was still some action. Get a refresher on episode 7, Friendless Child, here. Al Capone Al is at the end of his career and knows it. He’s about to face charges of tax evasion that will put him in prison for a long time. The scene between him and his hearing impaired son was very well done and almost made me feel sorry for the gangster who did a lot of very bad things. Al is last seen being swarmed by reporters on court...

Boardwalk Empire: King of Norway

Boardwalk Empire: King of Norway

1897 Flashbacks In the past, we’ve flashed forward from 1884 to 1897, where we find a young adult Nucky as a deputy sheriff in Atlantic City. In the past… we’ve moved forward…to the future in the past. OK I’ve gone crosseyed. All you need to know is that grown up Nucky is trying to win favor with the Commodore as well as with first wife Mabel’s father. Oh, and he found a body under the boardwalk. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Gillian Gillian makes a plea to Dr. Cotton for her release, but he’s not convinced that she should be free. Doubly terrifying is the unnecessary surgery...

Boardwalk Empire: Cuanto

Boardwalk Empire: Cuanto

1884 Flashbacks Stab me in the heart why don’t ya. Nucky’s summer job is over and the commodore is sending him back to school. Nucky and Eli wander around a bit while Nucky complains about the injustice of it all– and distracts Eli from their father’s fornication with another woman in their own house. They trespass in the hotel where Nucky shows Eli the wonders of a flushing toilet and a bathtub that fills itself when the Sheriff catches them. Instead of arresting them, he takes them home for dinner with his family. Eli is too young to get it, but Nucky is moved to tears by a loving family where there is plenty to...
