The Leftovers: “Don’t Be Ridiculous”

The Leftovers: “Don’t Be Ridiculous”

To say that this episode of The Leftovers was bizarre, as if something out of a feverish dream, is an understatement. In a very Nora-centric episode, we see her dealing with feelings of isolation, depression and finally anger, not to mention drifting in and out of some sort of parallel world. Is she going crazy? What the hell has really happened to all the people that suddenly departed? And what’s up with the return of a ’80s sitcom character, Mark Linn-Baker (remember Perfect Strangers?)?!  Oh, right, his castmates departed! Viewers will feel as though they took a plunge through the same rabbit hole that Alice did when she took...

HBO Films: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – Review

HBO Films: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – Review

Watching something about a deceased parent, the pain of loss, the lacking of vital information and family heartache is never an easy film to explore. Oprah Winfrey and Rose Byrne star as Deborah Lacks, Henrietta’s daughter and Rebecca Skloot, the journalist, in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. This movie is meant to explore all the good that Henrietta’s cell line did for medicine and science from that day forward and yet it also explores the depression and heartache that her children experienced for decades. It is not a feel-good story – rather it is one of a long, painful journey of some sort of redemption on the part of the...

HBO Movie Review: The Legend of Tarzan

HBO Movie Review: The Legend of Tarzan

I have always liked movies based on legends, folklore and dusty old fiction and the story of the Lord of the Apes is a good example. Alexander Skarsgard (of True Blood) portrays the legendary Tarzan, or Lord John Clayton III this time around. Margot Robbie plays his wife Jane, Samuel L Jackson plays George Washington Williams, an American diplomat, Djimon Hounsou plays a powerful Congolese chief and the ever charming Christoph Waltz portrays the evil Leon Rom, a Belgian citizen and envoy of King Leopold of Belgium. Of course, it really doesn’t hurt that Alexander Skarsgard is in fine form as I do appreciate a man who is ruggedly handsome,...

The Young Pope Season Finale: “Episode Ten”

The Young Pope Season Finale: “Episode Ten”

Lenny’s love letters are actually improving his image to the public, but he still is an ass with respect to the issues of abortion and gay people in the church. Note to Lenny: it is 2017, get off your high horse and get with the times. Lenny, being the Pope and all, has quite the busy time: meetings with heads of state, debriefing with members of the Vatican (Guiterrez, Sofia, etc) and of course, dealing with the monster of the year, Archbishop Kurtwell. Which leads us to an exchange between Lenny and Guiterrez. Guiterrez revealed what we pretty much suspected: he is a homosexual. And Lenny is an ass because he wants to more or...

The Young Pope: “Episode Nine”

The Young Pope: “Episode Nine”

Nothing makes me angrier than having to watch something about priests and finding out that they were sick and abhorrent child molesters. This episode was very unsettling, to say the least. A lot of plotlines to get though and none of them very ‘feel good.’ Well, perhaps at the end it wasn’t so bad. Gutierrez (pictured right) just reminds me of a little lost soul, someone with no place to go, completely out of his element and down on his luck. Trying to build a case against someone in a powerful position is never easy, but he just keeps on finding that whatever evidence or witnesses he has just doesn’t seem to hold any weight and...
