The Leftovers Series Finale: “The Book of Nora”

The Leftovers Series Finale: “The Book of Nora”

I confess that Nora was my least favorite character throughout the entire Leftovers series. I don’t know why; I felt she was too stiff, too rigid and devoid of any emotion. Then again, I have not suffered the sudden departure of a husband or children – and I would not be able to comprehend her grief and anger. She went from being an angry, lonely widow and grieving mother, to a  tougher woman who seemed to find some stability (in her relationship with Kevin Garvey Jr and her job) but at the end, she just spiraled into a dark descent. The fact that she wanted to go through with being zapped, just to be with her family, either...

The Leftovers: “Certified”

The Leftovers: “Certified”

Continuing to delve deeper into the human psyche, this week’s episode of The Leftovers display pain and trauma. The Sudden Departure did many things to many people: but most notably, we get an episode dedicated to Laurie Garvey and the pain she was forced to endure when the Departure took place. We get some insight into why she is the way she is. And it’s pretty sad. This episode sees Laurie, Matt, John, Michael, Nora, Garvey Sr. and Grace all gathering around a table to have a meal together. To the naked eye, it’s just a group of folks having a bite to eat, talking and spending time together. However, we know that this is no ordinary...

The Leftovers: “G’Day Melbourne”

The Leftovers: “G’Day Melbourne”

A tale of two “Kevins.” A trip to Australia leads to more confusion, heartache and bewilderment. A relationship on the skids. I don’t know about you, but watching Kevin and Nora’s relationship begin to unravel was unnerving (was it starting to unravel or did it just come undone with lightening speed?). We see the mysterious return of someone who was previously thought to be dead. Is Kevin completely losing his mind? What’s with the television in the hotel room? And the television flickering off while Kevin is staring at a woman who appears to be Evie – creepy or what?! No, we need to play that out. Here. The further we get into...

Movie Review: Victor Frankenstein

Movie Review: Victor Frankenstein

James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe play the scientific duo that attempts to bring a dead man to life in Victor Frankenstein. The road to hell is paved with good intentions and in this movie we see a man who is possessed with wanting to extend the boundaries of scientific exploration and the creation of life after death. We all know that when you’re playing around with experiments, unchartered territory and the possibility of resurrection, things don’t always end on a positive note. The two protagonists couldn’t be more different: Victor appears to come from an affluent family and is a medical student studying medicine at the London...

The Leftovers: “Don’t Be Ridiculous”

The Leftovers: “Don’t Be Ridiculous”

To say that this episode of The Leftovers was bizarre, as if something out of a feverish dream, is an understatement. In a very Nora-centric episode, we see her dealing with feelings of isolation, depression and finally anger, not to mention drifting in and out of some sort of parallel world. Is she going crazy? What the hell has really happened to all the people that suddenly departed? And what’s up with the return of a ’80s sitcom character, Mark Linn-Baker (remember Perfect Strangers?)?!  Oh, right, his castmates departed! Viewers will feel as though they took a plunge through the same rabbit hole that Alice did when she took...
