Big Little Lies: “Living the Dream”

Big Little Lies: “Living the Dream”

Big Little Lies has been a genre-bender since the start. It is both eloquent and shallow, juxtaposing existential statements with superficiality and masked behavior. “Living the Dream,” as the episode’s title, is a clear representation of this. We arguably see the darkest segment of the series at this episode’s end. As someone who has not yet read the novel, I believe the show is evolving with wondrously macabre mystery under the guise of a cliché story about rich white women. Jane’s reminiscence of her sexual assault made “Living the Dream” a very difficult episode to digest, which was horrifically yet phenomenally executed....

Girls: “American Bitch”

Girls: “American Bitch”

Girls is doing one thing right this season, and that’s showcasing every character for who they really are, or rather, who they have come to be. “American Bitch” centers exclusively around Hannah and Chuck Palmer, with a dreamy and outlandish atmosphere akin to “One Man’s Trash,” the fifth episode of season two which Hannah spends with Patrick Wilson. “American Bitch,” however, is much more biting and sour. There is an anxious tension and passive aggression consistent through Hannah and Chuck’s conversations as the episode goes on, and though their ethical journey seems to end on a (mostly) agreeable note, it is clear...

The Young Pope: “Episode Eight”

The Young Pope: “Episode Eight”

The holy (though truly unholy) ascension that Pope Pius XIII has vehemently and murderously fought for has come to a truly disturbing yet beautifully fitting climax in “Episode Eight.” By now, we are well aware that anything and everything Lenny does is entirely self-serving, masquerading God as his mask and taking brutal control of the Vatican with unfathomable self-indulgence. Additionally, forces continue to conspire against him at the Vatican, because clearly no good has become of Lenny becoming a dangerously self-centered bigot who outlaws abortion and homosexuality, lacking humanity and continuing to remain an unseen...

The Young Pope: “Episode Seven”

The Young Pope: “Episode Seven”

Most that kept up with The Young Pope thus far will agree it has cemented itself as an artistic and cinematically stunning series. It is breathtaking and beautifully orchestrated to fit each of its tones, from violently gritty to vibrantly lucid. We have watched Lenny—beg my pardon—Your Holiness, evolve as a narcissistic and vicious ruler akin to a dictator as Pope Pius XIII. His self-righteous nature has turned many against him, but Lenny always appears to have the upper hand. There are many theories surrounding Lenny’s intricate knowledge of everything occurring in the Vatican, but that’s up to personal interpretation. Let’s...

Westworld: “The Well-Tempered Clavier”

Westworld: “The Well-Tempered Clavier”

It is impossible to disagree with the fact that every episode of Westworld thus far has been compellingly unique and brilliantly existential. We have experienced the sentient growth of (mainly) Dolores, Maeve, and now Bernard. “The Well-Tempered Clavier” is the series at its darkest, with much regard to Bernard and Ford. I’m feeling heavy Hannibal Lecter vibes being channeled by Anthony Hopkins into Ford, adding to his sociopathic persona. There are many angles and approaches to predict where Westworld goes from here, so let’s break it down into our main characters. Dolores Dolores has existed as our predominant protagonist in the...
